I have known Debbie Martinez for a couple of years, one of which while she was on my 16’s team at Juggernaut Volleyball. From my experience with Debbie, I can say that she is an unparalleled competitor and a growing leader who will nicely compliment any competitive and cooperative team at the next level.
Debbie was one of the captains of our team, but more importantly she was the passion behind all that we did. Whether it was a match against a talented opponent or a simple passing drill in practice she was leading the charge with tenacity and grit. She led our team in serve receive passing and was an absolute anchor on defense digging balls all over the court, another statistic that she led our team in. That is also where she showed another great talent; toughness. She would throw herself anywhere, including into bleachers and net standards to get to a ball. I know that it took a physical toll on her, but she never once complained about the bumps and bruises and refused to be taken out of the match for an injury.
I also got to see a softer side of Debbie develop as our season progressed. To my knowledge she hadn’t had a lot of team leadership experience up to that point and at times it showed. She didn’t accept any lack of effort from teammates and any time she perceived such, she would let that teammate know of her displeasure. Early in the season it caused some friction, but we talked multiple times on how she could better interact with her teammates and lead with the same passion, but in an uplifting and a ‘follow me’ type demeanor. It was a pleasure to watch her blossom in both the technical aspects of volleyball and the joys of leadership.
Debbie’s goal is to play volleyball in college and I can say that her skills and her character will be an asset to any team.
