Being a student athlete requires me to take the work I do in the classroom and apply it to the court, and to take the work I do on the court and apply it to the classroom. I strive for a school where academics are rigorous and challenge me to develop new skills and grow as a student. I have grown up surrounded by a competitive environment due to Oakwood School's highly regarded academics. I have managed to focus and keep my grades up while experimenting with many different interests including theatre, basketball, softball, dance, and of course volleyball. I gained such a passion for volleyball and learned so much more than just the game. It taught me to communicate, go with my first instinct, have confidence in myself, and to be a mentally strong person. I have built long-lasting friendships and memories from all of these teams and am excited to make many more with the team I end up playing with during my college years. I have put my mind to being the best I can be in all aspects of myself as a student, and as an athlete. Freshman year, I walked into the gym barely knowing anything about this sport, and half way through that first year of playing I was moved up to Varsity as a starting Middle. When I asked my coach the reason for choosing me with my little experience, he told me, "You wanted it more than any other girl on the court." Since then, I have worked everyday in the gym, on the court, and in the classroom to improve myself to the level I want to play at. I would surround myself with players that had seven years more experience than me, and no matter how hard it was at first, it was the thrill of outplaying them for the starting position that drove me to improve. This past club season has been my most successful one because I am playing on a highly competitive team where each girl has the same infinite passion and love for volleyball as I do. Where ever I end up, I know it will be where I am meant to be. I cannot wait to find a college team where I not only see the same passion, but also see the same motivation towards improvement and growth as players and people.
