I have been running my whole life, but I've only been competing since arriving in Iowa from Haiti in eighth grade. Track found me when I was transitioning to a new culture and I needed something to put my energy into. I joined the school track team my first year in the U.S. and found that I loved it. I like running with the team because we all want the same thing - to go to State and to win.
It is a team sport, but also an individual sport. When I win a race I feel like my hard work paid off. I like to push past the voice that whispers to quit and I love to be one of the people who was strong and determined enough to finish the season well. I especially like being either the first or anchor leg of the 4X100 because I can either give my team a head start or I can help the team finish strong by giving the race everything I have.
I like the bonding that happens on a track team and I tend to do better in school when I am also running track. The demanding schedule keeps me focused. I especially like hurdles because they scare people. I feel like each time I clear a hurdle it is another fear I am dropping from my life. My goal is to continue running track in college and see how far I can go with track - how fast I can become with a strong team that shares my passion and willingness to work hard. My long-term goal is to become a pediatrician and being an athlete is one of the ways I'm preparing for that profession. It also means that I have to be focused on my education and my athletics to keep both of them moving forward. I'm prepared to do that work. Thank you for considering whether there is a spot for me on your team.
