Personal Statement
Dear coaches, Hi! My name is Kristen Henson. I am a Senior at Reagan High School. I have one sister, a mom, and a dad. They all support me so much in running and I am lucky to have the opportunities that are available to me. Also, I have 1 dog, 1 cat, and 1 bird. My dream, since I was 10, has been to become a vet so animals are important in my life. In my free time, I like to play sports, hang out with friends, and volunteer at the animal shelter. I am an A/B honor roll student and have never gotten a C on my report card. I am an extremely concientious worker and I always have been. I am normally the last person to finish all my tests because I am such a slow worker, but it is worth it for an A. My grades are a very important aspect of my life and help me achieve my goals. I am presently 17th in my class of 347 which is the top 5%. As a result of this, my normal schedule for a school day is: go to school, go to practice, go home and eat dinner, do my homework, take a shower, and go to bed. In middle school I was involved in Crosby Scholars, National Junior Honor Society, and S.A.V.E. (Students against violence everywhere). I received the Bryan Burddick award in middle school, which is an award for an all around good person who has good grades and is chosen as most athletic. In high school I am involved in Crosby Scholars, Athletes for Change, Fellowship of Christian athletes, Tri-M music honors society; I am Vice-President of Student government, and I am President of the National Honor Society. I received the teacher choice award my sophomore year, which is an award in which every teacher chooses one student who they felt stood out in their class for a particular reason that year. In addition to sports and clubs, I have played the flute in band since I was 10 years old and still play today. I played soccer since I was 3 years old and stopped before my freshman year, because I decided to focus more on running. I played soccer for the YMCA, 2 club teams, and middle school. As well as soccer, I have played basketball since I was 5 years old. I played for the YMCA, 3 AAU teams, a church team, a rec league, middle school, 1 year of JV and 1 of Varsity in high school. I also played volleyball since I was 11 years old where I have played Junior Olympic Volleyball, middle school, and JV in high school. I gave up both volleyball and basketball my Junior year to put all of my energy into running. I did not run cross country my freshman year and ran for the first time my sophomore year, but strained a tendon in the bottom of my foot; therefore was only able to run in four meets and was not able to finish out the season. I began running track at the age of 12. I was city-county champion in middle school for the 1600m both 7th and 8th grade year. My fastest time was 5:35 in middle school and I also ran the 800m in middle school. Then in high school, I have run the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. I qualified for the 1600m and 3200m at the 3A state championship my freshman year, finishing 4th in the 1600m and 3rd in the 3200m. My sophomore year I qualified for both the 1600m and 3200m again, but in 4A (our school was bumped up) state championship this year, where I scratched from the 1600m to focus on the 3200m. I finished 2nd in the state for the 3200m improving my time by 27 seconds. I qualified for the freshman mile at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 2009 and qualified for the 5k and 3200m at New Balance outdoor nationals this year. Unfortunately, I got sick with mono the week before NBN, so I couldn't run at nationals. I trained with a running coach the summer of my upcoming Junior year. My Junior season started out great, where I won the first two races in my conference cross country season and also placed high in a couple of invitationals. I started feeling really weak and couldn't get my numbers to improve regardless of what I did. I went to the doctor and discovered I was extremely anemic and my Ferritin count was 13. They put me on iron pills in November and I my counts still stayed low through my spring season. My PR for cross country was 18:46 and I was All-Conference. My spring season was a disappointment because my health still was not great. I am still going monthly to the doctor and keeping a check on my iron and my Ferritin, which is now 45. I worked hard all summer long and am running 55 miles a week and weight lifting 3 times a week. My Senior season started well, but I still am having iron issues, so I haven't improved my times as much as I wanted. I am now receiving iron IV infusions until my levels increase. I love sports, because you get to make life long friends and do something you enjoy at the same time. I love working hard in everything I do, whether it is school or a sport. I feel as though everyone on a team has something special to offer and I believe one of my most important qualities is my work ethic. As a result of this, I was captain of my middle school volleyball, basketball, and track team. In high school I was captain of my JV basketball team and I am captain for our cross country team this season. My goal for college is to go to a four year pre -vet/biology undergraduate program where I can run. I am open to any college, but I am looking for a college with a strong science and/or vet programs are: Cornell, Duke, Davidson, NC state, Virginia Tech, University of Tennessee, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, University of Virginia, William and Mary, Boston College, and any university or college with a vet school. Lastly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read through my scouting report and hope you are interested. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Kristen Henson
