I started running in the 5th grade and have loved it ever since. One of my favorite things about running is the community that surrounds the sport. Recently, at a two-week academic camp, I was able to keep up my summer training by running with several other high school athletes. We were able to get to know each other so much better because we shared a love for running. I have enjoyed being a team captain 8 times for 4 different sports because I have witnessed how my enthusiasm positively affects those around me. At that summer camp, we woke up at 6 AM to run before classes started. I was determined to run even though it was early in the morning. This devotion caused other people to look forward to morning runs as well. In addition to devoting myself to run over the summer, I devote time to track solely because I love the sport and I love competing. My school does not have a track so my team either runs around the school or sometimes at a nearby public asphalt track. This past track season, I have experienced firsthand why runners call track a “team sport.” As a junior, watching the seniors on the team graduate was difficult enough, but, to add to it, two of the girls on my All-State 4x400 team were leaving. We had trained together in order to reach a common goal. Running has forged an unbreakable bond between us because we have been through the rough times together but have lifted each other up. My track team has shown me that in order to love others fully, one must be the best they can be to inspire those around them. As a runner on the varsity track team at my school, I have learned how to adapt to better the team. Though my main event is the 400, I also run the 100, 200, 800, and many different relays. (My website has videos, PRs, and stats - www.brookereneelindsay.com) I have had to be versatile for my team. By staying motivated to achieve my personal goals, I have encouraged others to reach their goals as well. This has shown me that running is not an individual sport. In order to run the best one can, they must have a team of passionate people behind them.
