Hi My name is Kiara Mattern and I go to James Irwin Charter High School in Colorado Springs, Colordo. I have been running since I was 3 and I absolutely love it! It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I knew I wanted to run track and cross-county in college and the highest level of Track and Field and Cross-Country. My freshman year of track was hard because during the basketball season I sprained a ligament in my left leg. As a result I couldn't run. I worked hard in physical therapy and in the weight room strengthening my leg. I was not willing to quit because running is my passion. I believe my focus, strength, ability, dedication, and attitude set me apart from other athletes. I work hard every day so I can become a little better every day to reach my goals and this goes for my academics too! In the classroom it is the exact same. I strive for excellence. "Knowledge is power," and so that is why my goal is to obtain the highest accolades in my degree as I graduate from college. My family and I have held this expectation for years and I look forward to fulfilling this dream of education. I have a passion for numbers. I am already becoming settled in my major; my choice is to hold a career in mathematics.
