My name is Sarah Medellin. I'm 17 years old and have been swimming for the past 12 years of my life. This sport has always had a huge place in my heart. Through the instabilities that life has thrown at me, swimming has always remained a constant refuge. When I was younger, I attempted every other sport out there such as dance, cheerleading, soccer, and even gymnastics, but I always found myself returning to the pool. It was my sanctuary.
I've participated in my high school's Varsity swimming program for the last 3 years. Here I've made friendships that will last a lifetime, but also accomplishments I never imagined possible. Cinco Ranch Varsity Girls have been District Champions for the past decade, and this past season, our boys team joined us in claiming the Championship title. Individually, I've been All-District and All-Region for the past 3 years, and in the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays, I had the opportunity to be All-State and All-American. Although we did not preform very well at or state meet in Austin this past season, Cinco Girl's 400 Free Relay time (accomplished at Regionals) remains the fastest time in the state.
This upcoming season will not only be my season as a senior, but my last season as a Cinco Ranch Cougar. With the help of my dedicated coach, Christie Patterson, I hope to accomplish great goals. I wish to qualify for State and All-American individually, get as close to the 100 Butterfly record as possible, and watch my team claim 11 years worth of District Championships. But also this year, I will strive to be a good leader to my teammates. As a senior, I hope to be a good role model inside and outside the pool.
My dream is to receive a scholarship, so that I may continue doing the sport I love and attend a good university. I want to study medicine and become and Obstetrician. There have already been 2 generations worth of Dr. Medellins in my family, and I hope to continue this tradition and be the first woman physician in my family as well. A scholarship would most definitely help me accomplish this dream. I know that college is a wonderful accomplishment in itself, but the greatest accomplishment would be able to keep swimming for as long as I possibly can. Swimming in college is my biggest dream of all.
