I began swimming in kindergarten since there is a big lake behind our house and therefore my mom thought it would be best I learn how to swim. One swim lesson turned into 12 years of swimming, 6 days a week. It has been a mainstay of my life and a source of friends as I transitioned from a small, K-6 Montessori school to where I am now at Falmouth Academy, an Independent private day school. From kindergarten on, I learned how to balance my time, being dropped off at 6 am at a friend’s house so my mom could get to work, getting HW done in the car, and fitting in swim, and coming home at 9 o’clock in the evening. Now that I drive myself around, I manage to get a few more hours of sleep, but I now I also have a part time job at a fish market to fit into my schedule.
Another part of my life in recent years has been basketball. Attending Falmouth Academy has allowed me to play basketball in middle school, on the JV team, and for the past two years as a member of the Varsity team. Even with only 8-10 girls on the team each year, we have been the division champions for the past two years. Basketball has allowed me to be a member of a team which balances well with the individual nature of swim.
As a swimmer, my coach often uses me to demonstrate wall technique, as I am able to come off with a quick turn and speedy dolphin kicks. My strokes have always varied as to which one is the “best”. This means that I put in work to improve all of them. I want to swim in college to continue being part of a team and to meet new people who are crazy enough to wake up at 5 am for practice. I hope to continue to cut down my times with hopes of placing in a championship meet.
I will be a valuable member of a college team because I bring hard work and dedication and I am always a team player.
