For as long as I can remember, soccer has been one of the most rewarding components in my life; it has been that constant I could rely on, to draw from when everything else seemed uncertain: as a five-year-old looking for a way to make new friends in a strange place as a result of my mom’s job transfer, or again as a second grader trying to fit in to yet another new school as a consequence of one more career move. Acquaintances that began on the soccer field grew into some of the closest friendships I have today.
Soccer has also been an influential teacher; moving from recreation league play to travel club competition showed me a higher skill level and faster pace of play that I aspired to achieve. It has created a hunger in me to train relentlessly through the extreme climates each season brings, push my limits both physically and mentally, and to expand my skill set through exposure to different coaching styles and veritable opponents, even when it comes as the humbling result of coming up short against a superior player. It’s created a determination in me to up my game, play at a higher level each season, each tournament, each game, each training session. It’s taught me to live by the phrase “that which does not kill you makes you stronger”.
I’ve been deliberate in applying these lessons learned on the field in how I conduct myself daily. I’ve learned to lead, both on and off the field, in a constructive mode to inspire and engage at the risk of critiquing and demoralizing. I’ve learned humility and humbleness as well as how to be a good sport. I’ve learned that the mechanics applied in athletics translate to academics; and I approach my scholastic goals largely in the same way. My parents have instilled in me the importance of an education, of continued learning, and to give 100% every time, no question.
It’s a love that started 11 years ago on a field in upstate New York and has grown into a passion that’s woven into the fabric of my life today. It would be my dream to play at the collegiate level, continuing to learn, to be shaped and sculpted, by the game I love the most.
