Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Alexia Schumcher and I currently play for DASC Great Plains Xtreme in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Being 5'3" i have aquired the position as starter center forward and center midfield. After joining my team in January of 2010, I helped lead them to five championships in one season, the most the team every had. I have been playing soccer for twelve years, and prior to playing club i played two years of advance soccer, taking both the spring and fall cups, plus the state cup. Then freshman year i started JV and received the MVP Midfielder award along with the scholar athlete award, which I also received sophomore year. My junior year, my club team decided that we needed more competition, since the field isn't very competitive in South Dakota High School soccer. So we stayed together as a club and traveled around the midwest playing premier league tournaments. That opportunity alone made us all grow significantly as players.
I feel like i could offer a lot to any team. I keep myself very busy between soccer 4-5 times a weeks, preparing for Nationals for debate, plus work and school. Through all of this I manage to stay committed and focused at soccer, continueing to improve every practice. This obtained focus has made me very concious of what is happening on the field, making it easier to see plays and opportunities for scores. Also, i've become very scrappy throughout the years. Being small stacked versus some huge defenders has taught me never to back down until the whistle is blown, making for some very competitive games. But finally, I have been wanting to play college soccer since I new it existed. For years when people asked me what i wanted to do in college, all I could say is play soccer. Now I have more of an idea what i want to do, but soccer definately has not taken a back seat in my mind.
As a junior in high school i have been really considering where i want to go to school, and yet the options are still wide open. I want to stay in the midwest, or else go to the west coast. I know that I might want to stay close to home, but I've always wanted to have the west coast expirience. I have been looking at more University and State schools, but honestly I'm open for much anything. Okay, kind of. I prefer a larger class size, around 10,000 or greater. Acedemically recognized but nothing too prestiguous, and finally division 1, 2, or 3. For me, I just want the best experience possible, and that can happen wherever I am, as long as i get the chance to play soccer that is.
Aside from playing soccer i'm looking to major in Psychology and some form of cognitive neuroscience. I find this major to be very bland for now, but as i pursue it further I will develope a more solidified field of study under Psychology.
When looking to financial assistance, it would be much needed for me. We are not as affluent as some families are, so I will be paying for my own college education. I have had the same job for the last two and a half years in order to pay for any and all soccer expenses, plus debate travel expenses, and anything else in my daily life, like my car and cell phone. I know I should be able to receive federal grants, but I also hope to achieve scholarships beyond that, in order to make it as easy as possible for me.
In conclusion, I really hope to see myself a part of a team my freshman year. I want to play as competitively as possible, so as to challenge every skill i've developed. I hope to find a team and join a family, just like I have done with my club team. In one year I have made a huge impact on this team, and as we continue to excell, I hope to do that again in the future. I want to play with reason, and that will only happen for me in college.
