Academics and playing soccer have always come easy for me and I haven't always been challenged. As a freshman, I was an all conference and 2nd team all region goal keeper and my U-15 travel team reached the semi-finals of the North Carolina State Cup. At the conclusion of my freshman year, my GPA was ranked # 1 in my class. However, things completely changed when my dad accepted a transfer the summer before my sophomore year.
Upon moving to Greenville, South Carolina, I had to essentially restart my soccer and academic career. I was no longer at the top of my class and I realized that I would have to fight to climb into the top ten. I was no longer the designated first string varsity goalkeeper and I quickly understood that it was going to be a major accomplishment just to make the varsity team at JL Mann, the defending SC 4A State Champion. I was facing many new and difficult challenges.
I faced these challenges head on, and while it wasn't always easy, I feel that I successfully handled every thing that came my way. I made straight A's for my sophomore year and I scored in the 94th percentile on the PSAT. I made the varsity team for JL Mann, and while my playing time was significantly reduced compared to my freshman season, I still worked hard to better myself every day in practice and made the most of my opportunities when I did appear in games.
While it hasn't been easy and I would not have chosen to make these changes on my own, I have become a better person, student, and soccer player. I am looking forward to new challenges in my junior year as I take on harder classes and really begin to prepare for college. I will also strive to become the starting goalkeeper for JL Mann and look to lead my team back to the state tournament. The past year has made me better prepared for the challenges of college -meeting new people, taking difficult classes, fighting for playing time and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way - and I feel that I have much to offer to the university where I will continue my academic and athletic career.
