“Character is not about words explaining one’s actions, but about actions that do not need an explanation.” I love this quote!
In order for me to answer the question of what sets me apart from the other recruits, I thought I would ask some of my teammates the same question. I asked them to be brutally honest with their responses.
One teammate described me as “aggressive, tenacious, and focused”. She told me I that I am “focused on improving, getting better, and working to stop the ball mentally”. My team captain said that “my work ethic, determination, and loyalty to my teammates sets me apart”. The coach that recruited me to be the new goalie for our team described me as “coachable, naturally-athletic, positive, and mentally tough”.
Remember, these are people with whom I live, interact, and share experiences everyday. While all of their feedback was flattering and sounds extremely self-serving, it was also pretty accurate. I know exactly how tough it gets to keep calm and channel the negative energy of getting scored upon into productivity. Channeling is a tactic that I use everyday, whether I’m at practice, at a game, or in even in the classroom. I give my team my all every time I pick up my stick and my helmet - in practice or in games. It does not matter where I am because as long as I have my team counting on me, I give nothing less than all I have.
Of course I want to get into the best college possible, one that is the right fit for me. I have enjoyed quite a bit of academic success, but I am aware that there are others out there with the same or even better GPA's. I do believe, however, that with my combination of academic and athletic achievements, as well as my people skills, I will be able to distinguish myself in college and later in life. I hope to go to a school where I will be able to cultivate myself within my major. If being able to play the sport that I so dearly love helps me to reach my goal, then I am completely devoted to the task.
I might not have all the answers yet. I am not sure of the profession I will choose, but I know who I am right now. I am a hard-working student. I am a dedicated athlete. Most important of all, I am a fiercely loyal teammate. The goalie is entrusted to safeguard the hard work of our team, and I will never betray that trust.
