“Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway” – John Wayne. This is a quote I live by because I’ve learned that in life you always have situations that may be scary but you just have to push through them. I am an 18 year old high school senior who has had to work hard to get where I am. I am in my 13th year at Trinity Valley School, a K-12 college preparatory school in Fort Worth, Texas. I learned early to set goals and work to achieve them.
I am caring, loving, hardworking, and a loyal friend. I am there whenever my friends need my help with anything. I have been there for my friends for the past 8 years through thick and thin. I look forward to making these friendships stronger as we all take on our different paths into college; and I am excited to make new friendships as I take on my college experience.
The game of golf has helped me become a hard worker, because it takes a lot of dedication to master the sport. Over the last 7 years I have learned and perused this game. It has also taught me to never give up and to fight for what I want. The game of golf has taught me to set goals for myself and to achieve them and then set even higher goals. Everything that I have learned from golf, I have been able to transfer into my school life as well.
Last year I set the goal of making All Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) in golf. To achieve that, I had to finish in the top ten players at our conference tournament. In the months leading up to the tournament I prepared both physically and mentally. With each tournament I learned to conquer my fears and play through my nerves as well as play through shots that I did not think were good. By day two of the final tournament I was successful in achieving my goal in finishing in the top ten and making All SPC.
Also in my junior year, I set a goal to make a 3.0 GPA for the second semester even though I had to miss a day a week from February through the end of April playing in golf tournaments. I had to make up a lot of missed work and meet with my teachers outside of class. I never let the stress of all the work I was missing stop me from achieving my goal. By the end of semester I had a 3.0. In my senior year I earned all A’s and B’s, which has made my grade point average increase every year. This year I was more successful because I learned how to ask for help. I also gave it my all and was more motivated to do well with my college goal in mind. While test taking is not my strong suit, I have always tried my hardest in every testing situation. I am not a good test taker because I make myself so nervous and put so much pressure on myself that I do not do as well as I need to. Despite this, I still enjoy learning and the process of learning.
Life is full of ups and downs. I have learned through hard work and perseverance that I have the ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success. I will use my skills and dedication to reach my goals.
