This past spring, my teammates and I paved the way as the first Girls’ Varsity Golf Team at Yorktown High School. The majority of the girls on the team had not yet competed at the high school level, seeing as only four of us had played on the boys’ team in previous years. As a result, we players had much to learn about teamwork, both on and off the golf course. We spent our days bettering our golf game at practice and our nights forming relationships as a team through team bonding activities. As a player on the Boys’ Varsity Golf Team, I had a very different experience. We did not feel like a cohesive team. We spent no time at all together outside of practice and many of the boys didn’t even acknowledge each other off of the golf course. For these reasons, I am extremely grateful for the creation of the girls’ team. If not for the formation of the Girls’ Varsity Golf Team, I would have never met many of my closest friends. I credit much of our success as a team to the genuine relationships, as well as healthy competition, among teammates. Our work as a team allowed us to finish undefeated throughout the season, send 4 girls to sectionals, of which our team captain and I qualified for the second round and she went on to compete in the States Tournament. Our continued support of our captain as she competed at States is evidence that our team has formed great relationships that will continue both in and out of season. Through my experiences on both teams, I have learned the importance of teamwork and forming relationships among teammates. For these reasons, I will be an excellent addition to any college golf team.
