Though I was introduced to golf in elementary school, the sport never developed into my passion until I reached high school. I soon realized how much golf really taught me about myself, on the golf course and in school activities.
I attend Whitney High School in Southern California, ranked the second best High School in the state. Despite the challenging academic courses, I am able to maintain a balance between golf, grades, and other activities. Being on Varsity Golf for the past two years has helped me understand the importance of sportsmanship. In most tournaments outside of school, golf is usually played as an individual sport, so being a part of a golf team gave me new perspective and the experience of working together with people that had similar passions as mine. As a result, our team was able to place first in our league for the first time in girl’s golf at Whitney High School. In addition to golf, I have also been a part of the Whitney High School award winning Color guard for the last two years. The discipline and constant practice needed in this activity has added to the amount of dedication I have, whether it be in golf or daily life. The ability to contribute the time and practice for golf, color guard, and studies has greatly improved my time management skills as well.
I am also involved in programs that give back to the society. As I was able to take a larger variety of classes in high school, I began to develop a love and appreciation for science. In order to increase my knowledge about this subject and to further explore my other passions, I began to volunteer at SPCA , the society of the prevention of cruelty to animals, at least once a week for the past year. I assist with food, laundry, training and interacting with dogs that are isolated because of illness. My love for science also gave me the opportunity to be accepted into a Docent Program in Cabrillo Marine Aquarium the summer after freshman year. This program heightened my knowledge about marine biology, and challenged my speaking and leadership skills as I became a tour at the aquarium.
In all of the activities I am involved with, golf has had an influence on all of them. Throughout the years that I have played, I learned what hard work, drive, and even what true frustration felt like, but in the end this gave me the perseverance I have today. The skills that I have developed with my golf game and the qualities I have acquired in my character have given me the tools I need to be successful in future ventures and schooling.
