Personal Statement

Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My parents both played college sports, and I played a different sport each season for most of childhood, but the basketball court was always a place that I was comfortable. When my whole family got together for holidays, we would go to the gym and play. People would always say to me, “Oh my goodness, you are so tall, you should play basketball!” And as it turns out, I loved the game. I started off playing in a Saturday morning league, then house league, and finally, began playing AAU in fourth grade.

I’ve played hundreds of games, spent thousands of hours in the gym, and it’s all started to pay off. This past season was my most productive, most improved season ever. I had never taken a 3-pointer in a game, and had over 100 points of 3-pointers alone this year. I was named a captain, and for the first time was leading a much younger team. We weren’t supposed to make it to conference playoffs, and we made it to the regional tournament. My leadership skills are something that sets me apart from a lot of other players. Another unique attribute I have is my basketball IQ. As a sophomore, I was a starter on the first girls’ basketball team to go to the State Tournament from my school. I was a starter because of my ability to see the court and pass the ball or set a screen to get my teammates open. The State Tournament is a big goal for me to return to my senior year.

Academics is also extremely important to both me and my family; after all, you go to school to get an education and if you get to play basketball too, that’s a bonus. I am ideally looking for a school that understands that balance as well, because while basketball is an important part of my life, it will be over after 4 years and I will have to fall back on my education to get me through the rest of my life.

Overall, I am just looking for a good school, both academically and athletically, with a family-like team who's ready to win!
