Personal Statement

My goal ultimately is to play Basketball for a good college and get a great education to go into Criminal Justice while playing the sport I love, an while I'm pushing to overcome a bad year in school, I hope to place higher in my class than I ever have in my high school career. My choice of Criminology was mainly influenced by my uncle, my teachers I've been surrounded with, and other outside influences, while my basketball was influenced mainly by my parents. Both my parents taught me my rough play-style, and how to use my size against others for my team's favor. They both have done everything to help me in the sport, from paying to put me on special teams and in special camps, to being there when I'm so frustrated I'm in tears. They have supported me as I push and fight to get to the top and play for college. I really started playing basketball for a team in the 1st grade, but I've always been interested in it, and amazed by the amount of teamwork it requires, and how strong of bonds it can create. Basketball continuously brings out changes and details about myself I never knew, like how fiercely protective I am of my teammates, and how competitive I really am against other teams, and my own teammates in practice. Before I started my junior summer, I had issues with lack of confidence in myself and my abilities, and I struggled to believe I even deserved a spot, my true talent only coming out at the end of my sophomore year and the beginning of my Junior year. But after a year of not getting anywhere by relying on others, I picked myself up, realized that I've played basketball my entire life and I am more than deserving the spot I currently hold on my High School Varsity team, and pushed my limits, getting exponentially better throughout the summer not only in my skills, but in my self-confidence. I transformed myself, with help from my parents, my coaches, and my trainers, into not only a better player, but a better team player, and have honed and trained my abilities to far greater levels than they ever have been, and plan to come as close as I can to perfecting them for my senior year, and college.

What makes me different from most others that are my size is the fact that, while I am quite large and strong, I have the ability to not only run faster than most of the guards on my current varsity team, but also to be able to jump higher than both of our tallest players, and still be able to direct the ball when jumping. I have trained myself to be able to put the ball in any guard's hands at jump ball, and have out-jumped nearly every girl I've come across, despite my lacking in height compared to them. I would be a valuable addition to a team because I have the ability to not only push others from the paint and effectively guard the middle, but also keep up with any guard you pair me with, get almost all the rebounds, and be able to pop out to the perimeter, or handle the ball a little when needed.

I also have the unusual advantage of being left handed, and I pride myself on being risky and scrappy when it comes to loose balls, turnovers or quick plays.
