Personal Statement

My name is Kyla Overskei and I am a shooting guard for Maple Grove High School. I have been playing basketball since I was 5 years old and it has played a major role in shaping the person I am today.  While most people generally believe that a sport is about teaching you how to win, I believe it goes deeper than that. This sport has taught me there is nothing more important than putting in the hard work and giving it your all every day.  If you want to get better at a sport, the only way to do it is by hard work and not taking shortcuts.  Additionally, it has taught me to believe in myself.  In the sport of basketball, you will not succeed unless you believe in yourself and the teammates you play with. Just like life, in basketball, there are ups and downs, successes and failures along with many challenges along the way.  I have learned to tackle these in the sport and life which has made me the player I am today.

Since I first stepped on the court, I have aspired to play at the collegiate level. I have strong ball handling skills, great shooting range, and a scoring mentality. I am a team player and try to lead by example while also encouraging everyone around me. In addition to that, each day I make sure to listen to the feedback of my coaches and strive to be one of the hardest working players for any team I am a part of.

I currently play AAU for Minnesota Fury Premier.  I have been playing AAU basketball since I was 10 years old.  In the 2020 AAU season, I named to the Prep Hoops All-Tournament team, had the highest scoring on the team, and was recognized as being one of the breakout players of the year.

Off the court, I study hard and maintain a high GPA which is a 3.95.  I am a part of the National Honor Society and Link Crew at Maple Grove High school where I mentor incoming Freshman. I also volunteer at local youth basketball camps and at Lyngblomsten nursing home to help the elderly population who have been hit the hardest by Covid-19.

Playing in college is my dream and I have a strong love for the game. I strive to be a leader on and off the basketball court by maintaining good grades and relationships with others. I am consistently seeking to improve my skills, even outside of team practice, by working out every day at the gym, playing pick-up games and practicing drills by myself. I have a competitive edge and push myself and my teammates to be the best we can be.
