My name is Megan Konig, and I am currently a 12th grade varsity starter on my high school basketball team. Basketball is my passion, and I have been playing for so long, that I cannot remember a time when I didn’t play basketball. I am a devoted and hardworking player. I have been told by my coaches that I have a high basketball IQ because I can see the whole floor, I think on my feet, and I know how to play more than one position. I am very organized and my grades show that I am good at time management considering how much time I commit to basketball. My work ethic is also very strong both in my classes and on the court. I know you cannot have one, without the other.
Growing up in a family with both parents and a brother and sister has taught me how important family is. Being there for one another and doing things together as a family has influenced me most as I am growing up. This strong sense of family is easily applied to my basketball team/family and it is reflected in my accountability to my teammates, my coaches, and my parents.
I have been playing basketball since I was four years old. My brother, who is four years older than me, played basketball, lacrosse, and football. I wanted to be just like him and the only boys’ sport I could play was basketball. That is where my love of the sport started. Prior to 6th grade, I only played on boys' basketball teams. I thought boys seemed more serious about playing and winning. I transitioned to girls' AAU basketball in 6th grade and I quickly found out that there are girls who are just as serious about basketball as I am. I strive, through playing basketball and training for basketball, to get better and tougher each year.
Through playing basketball I have learned how important it is to be part of a team, and that I am a great teammate. I am very supportive of my fellow players, cheering them on through good times and bad times. I’m one of the first ones to help a player off the floor or high five them for a good play. I am not a selfish player during a game; working hard to do what is best for team, not just myself. This year I was picked as Captain by my team for my high school team. It meant so much to me to know my teammates feel this confident about me. Another thing I have learned about myself is that I am dedicated and hardworking both on and off the court. I put in extra time working on the fundamentals so when practice comes around I can focus on what our team has to do together to get the win.
Besides working hard on the court, I also work hard on my school work. I have made the regular Honor Roll every report card in my life and I did achieve Principal’s Honor Roll in June 2013. I know how important it is to get good grades so that I can get in to a good college and have a life like the one I have grown up with. My goal for high school is to continue to keep focused on my classes and grades so that I can continue to be on the Honor Roll. This goal rolls right over to my college goals. Nowadays it is hard for college graduates to get a job, and employers look at more than your degree. Finishing college with a GPA similar to my high school GPA is my top goal. Achieving this goal will give me my best chance of finding a good job when I graduate college.
