Personal Statement

Hi, My name is Katelyn Newsome and I attend Sheldon Clark High School. My video on here is of me playing during  my freshman and sophomore year.  I live in the small town of Inez Ky. I am currently ranked number one in my class of 172 students. I have never made a B in my life. My strongest academic area is Reading. I love to read. I am 5'8 and weigh around 120 pounds.
My mom is a teacher and was the coach of Sheldon Clark High for 25 years. She played college basketball at Morehead State. She was one of the most successful players in the game. She was just recently named to the Ky High School Hall of Fame. I was pretty much borned with a basketball in my hands. Having a mom for a coach I grew up in the gym.
I can never remember not playing basketball. I played in elememtary school. Our team won the Co Championship and I was always a starter. I moved on to middle school and was a 3 year starter. My 8th grade team had a record of 32-2. We palyed in the Middle School State Tournament and advanced to the semifinals. I played the point guard in middle school. As an 8th grader I became a high school starter. I started every high school game my 8th grade year. I played the 2 guard. I played behind a Jr. point guard who went on to sign D 1 .  I ended the season averaging around 10 points a game. It was a dream come true. I was finally palying high school basketball. My season high was winning the Class A Regional Championship and making it to the Class A State. We won 2 games in the Class A State and I was named to the Class A All Tournament Team.
Moving onto my freshman year in high school, once again I was a starter. Pre-Season I was named by Cats Paws as one of the top 10 players in the Region. I was only one of 2 freshmans that made the list. Our team won 20 games and we also won the District Tournament , but lost in the Region. This is when I was introduced to a chaser. No one had ever given me that much respect. Well it got my attention quick. I averaged around 13 points a game and shot the ball extremely well ending the year shooting over 40 percent from the 3 point line.
My Sophomore year started out being named to Jody Deming's Louisville Courier Journal Pre-Season Top 10 Sophomores in the State of the Class of 2013.  I was moving up the list in Cats Paws Pre Season Rankings. I was ranked number 6 in the Region being the only sophomore in the top 10 listed. We had a dream season. We won the Class A Region and advanced to the State. We won the District Tournament and the Regional Tournament advancing to the Ky Sweet Sixteen. I had fianlly made it to the State Tournament. My mom had played in four of them in high school , so I had heard plenty about it. She had lost out in the first round game as a player and a coach every time. We won the first game and I had 23 points and was named the National Guard Player of the Game.  We went on to lose the second game , but I had 23 in this game also and made the Sweet Sixteen All Tournament Team. I finished the year averaging around 14 points a game. Our teams record was 28 and 8. We played a very hard schedule. I was named to the 15th region All Tournament Team and the All District Area first team.
It is my dream to play college basketball. This is all I have ever done. Growing up it has always been my dream.  I  can handle the ball, shoot the 3 , and have a mid range jumper, with good speed. I have worked on my strength this whole summer.  I can bench 95 pounds and 85  on all my reps.  I like to think I am a smart basketball player with a lot of heart, and a team player. I'm the first one on the court and the last one to leave.  I would like to continue my basketball skills and further my education. I have always been a winner on and off the court.
Going into my Jr. year I was just recently nameed to the Ky Cats Pause number 1 player in my region.  I also had a great summer and attend a lot of camps.  I attend the Blue Chip High Exposure Camp and was named the Top Jr in the camp.  I also made the Top 20 All Star Team and won the 3 point shooting contest hitting 8 out 10 three pointers to qualify and then 7 out of 10 to win the title.  God has blessed me with a great family and a great life.  One other thing about me.  I have traveled to every state in the US except 6.  My parents have taken us all over the US on vacations since me and my sister Boo were small children.

Hope you like my video and my profile.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Katelyn Newsome # 10
