I lived most of my life in Alaska, moving to Kentucky last year, which was a bit tough in the middle of high school. Living in the arctic presented many challenges for my family, requiring flexibility and ‘a little bit extra’ in daily life. The responsibilities of hauling water, chopping wood, shoveling snow and traveling long distances on a near daily basis for 9 months of winter taught me that nothing is gained without hard work and dedication. While life is easier and more convenient here, I remain grateful for those character building opportunities that have made me a stronger and more disciplined person.
As for academics, math has been my weakest area, but with extra work, I have been able to improve this, which is an accomplishment I am proud of. My GPA improved also this first quarter, despite the demands of another varsity sport. I have scheduled a retake of the ACT and am confident I will increase my score having had more test preparation.
In addition to on-campus housing and offering one of my majors of interest in either a Sports Medicine related discipline or Fire Science, affordability is perhaps one of the most important factors in my college decision. I am particularly interested in work-study programs. While I would love to be a reasonable distance from home for convenience, this is not a determining factor.
This year, I am the lone senior and one of only two upperclassmen/returning starters on my high school team. It won't be easy, but I look forward to the season and the challenges ahead. My belief is that a committed athlete and representative of any institution should demonstrate a superior work ethic in academics and by giving their all in practices and games. I feel that I would be a strong asset to any team who lives by these values.
