As a freshman in High School I learned a very valuable life lesson when I did NOT make my high school softball team. As a fifteen-year-old I wanted to find a big rock and hide, I wanted to transfer schools, I wanted to give up softball. I was devastated.
I had two choices that year. I could hang up my cleats or I could get to work. I elected to work harder, work longer, work with a focus I hadn’t had before. I identified a need on the team, they were short on pitchers. I found a pitching coach and increased my personal workout schedules with private lessons. I was behind the curve and I knew it but I kept working. I made the team as a sophomore and it felt like a homerun when I saw my name on the list outside the gym. My in-game opportunities increased throughout the season. My favorite moment was pitching a no-hitter my junior year. At our awards banquet, last year our head coach, Leslee Warr, had this to say, “Bri worked her tail off and improved 300%. There was never a time that Bri wasn’t working during the offseason and her dedication is really starting to payoff, I can’t wait to see what next year brings with her.” As a senior, I’m again working hard during the off season to improve the speed of my fast-ball, the surprise of my changeup, and the zip of my curve.
I envision my college years will be full of more personal growth opportunities. I plan to continue working hard to reach specific goals I set athletically and academically. On the field, I plan to be an asset to my team and a positive influence. In the classroom, I plan to stay on top of my assignments and study. I will be a dynamic and respectful student-athlete. I understand that the way I interact with people reflects my teammates, coaching staff and the school.
I know how to work hard and I’m not afraid of putting in the time needed to reach my goals.
