I have been involved in professional baseball for the past 43 years, 15 years as a player, 2 years as a scout, and 26 years as a coach. After attending Baylor university, I was a second-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played in the Major Leagues with Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Minnesota. I lead the National League in consecutive scoreless innings in 1983 and was third in the league with 3 shutouts. I pitched 2 games in the 1987 World Series for St. Louis and had a 2.18 era. After playing in the states, I played in Japan’s Major League for 3 seasons and pitched the first game in 45 years where no fly ball outs were recorded. Soon after playing in Japan my coaching career started with the Texas Rangers where I coached at every level and also coordinated their minor league pitching development. After Texas, I coached in the Major Leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers for 8 years and with the Cincinnati Reds for 4 years. I had 8 players who were named first time All-Stars, and 2 who were awarded the Rolaids Relief Award.
Along the way, I became a client of NCSA as my daughter Natalie was entering her senior year of high school. The help and encouragement that she received as a result of NCSA was invaluable to both her and me as a parent. Before NCSA Natalie had received little contact from colleges and only one offer. As a result of working with NCSA, she received over 12 offers and found a school that she absolutely loved! That illustrates why I am so passionate about being a part of the NCSA team. My heart as a coach was to positively impact the lives of my players and to help them on their journey toward their dreams. NCSA provides the opportunity to daily impact the lives of student athletes and their families.
