Personal Statement

My name is Kurt TeBeest.  I was born and raised in Montevideo, MN.   I am a distance athlete at Montevideo Senior High School graduating in 2017.  When I was in 5th grade I decided to try a 5K.  I thought I would just go out and run.  I didn’t do very well and I didn’t like that feeling so I decided the next time I would train first before running the race.  The training helped me realize two things: one, I liked running and two, I really liked the idea of getting better at each race.

I really enjoy running as an individual but I also am very excited about being a part of a team. In my sophomore year my whole team went to the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet and I enjoyed sharing the experience with others on my team.  In track I was so proud this spring to be a part of the Montevideo team that won the Class A State True Team Championship.  At this meet I was called upon to compete in the 400, 1600, 3200 and triple jump.

I am looking forward to the challenge of college.  Academically, I have had to overcome some challenges.  I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in early elementary school and have had to learn a lot of strategies and use outside resources to achieve my 3.1 GPA.  In elementary school and early Jr. High I attended a Reading Therapy program which required me to travel to a nearby  town every day for two hours and then return to school to attend classes.   I enjoy school and I am not afraid to work hard to learn.  I am interested in the mortuary science area and would like to become a licensed mortician.  Since I have been around the business I like the idea of being able to help people in their time of need.  I am open to attending college and majoring in business or the area of biology, both of which would be an asset to an eventual mortuary science degree and license.

In addition to running I have other interests and goals I am working toward.  I am currently studying to obtain my private pilots license.  I have been studying and flying for about a year and hope to have my license sometime next year.  I am also working on my Eagle Scout Badge.  My project was designing and building a disc golf course for our community.  My project will be completed by winter 2017.

I have had the benefit in Montevideo of great coaches.  Not only school coaches but others in the community who care about youth and running have helped and encouraged my progress.  I come from a low mileage program and I am excited for the possibilities of more progression with more mileage.  I look forward to the future and I would like to take my running to a new level in college.
