For my first 3 years of high school track, I had a teammate who was of similar top speed and ability in almost all of our events. As the years progressed, each of our strengths and weaknesses became apparent, and we began to separate from each other in some events, like the high jump. Our main event was the high hurdles. Year after year we were nearly dead even with each other, and every time of us PR'd, the other would usually PR at the next meet. Beating him and being better than him was constant motivation for me to get better, and helped me in races to put me over the top. I have nothing against him, I respect him and we are friendly, no hostility. It is simply my competitive spirit that is evident in even the shortest races. I hate to lose, but I can respect a good finish and still be unsatisfied.
