Personal Statement

My dream is to run professionally. To represent myself, my family and community in my achievements on and off the track. I'm blessed to be living in the home of 15 track and field Asian record holders including 3000m steeplechase world record holder, Saif Saaeed Shaheen.  In Qatar expectations are high and the competition is as tough as the training. It's why qualifying for the national team is as difficult as meeting an Olympic standard. Though it may seem challenging, it is attainable. However it requires strategic planning consisting of short and long term goals. One of them is to run in college since it would help me gain an incredible experience by training with dedicated men and women and competing in many historic tournaments. I aspire to reach a place that will discipline me athletically as well academically. Getting there will make a life-changing impact permanently and I am dedicated and disciplined to do what I need to do get there-- so that, when I get there, I can continue to challenge myself everyday and continue to improve. My dream is to run, and I will run towards it until I break records and make all those who believe in me proud.

  • 2012 Al-Gharafa Sports Club (Youth )
  • My 2012 debut with Al Gharrafa Sports Club was a progressive year. I met new coaches, improved my form and lowered my times dramatically. Though a number of injuries acted as major setbacks, I recovered quickly with the help of my coach's care. Since I trained with juniors and seniors rather than people of my own age category, I was able to challenge myself and advance. Allowing me to qualify for the Qatar Youth Cross Country Championships and finish the year by breaking my high school's 800m record by over two seconds.

Training

  • General Running
  • 5 years
  • My training is categorized into three phases. Base training in summer, pre-competition in fall and competition in winter/spring. Averaging 60 miles per week in the first phase, 50 per week in the second and 40 in the third with most of it at a fast pace. I plan and keep track of my workouts with my own training log in which my club coach monitors weekly.
  • Cross Country
  • 5 years
  • My cross country base training starts at the beginning of summer. Classifying the month of May as pre-season. My coach tells me that it revolves around low intensity/high volume so I run twice a day, averaging 60 miles per week at a descent pace. As the season progresses my long runs fade into fast intervals to prepare me for the competitions that lie ahead in the fall.
  • Indoor Track & Field
  • 2 years
  • Once cross country season ends in autumn, preparation for the winter indoor period begins. Training primarily takes place on an outdoor track with occasional visits to an indoor track to familiarise myself with the tight curves and narrow lanes. Workouts consist of fast intervals except for Friday and/or Saturday since my coach and I use the time to do strength work in the club's gym. Other than that - training is twice a day, consisting of easy runs in the morning and repeats in the afternoon.
  • Outdoor Track & Field
  • 5 years
  • As the winter season comes to an end, the transition from indoor training to outdoor begins. Just like cross country and indoor season, training is still twice a day except for Friday since that's an easy day. Spring is considered the "competition phase" so the weekly mileage goes down but the intensity remains the same. I plan and keep track of my workouts with my own training log in which my club coach monitors weekly.
