Personal Statement

My name is Kyle Burton, I am 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weight 140 lbs.  I reside in Nashville, Tennessee and attend Pearl Cohn Magnet High School where I am a senior.  I am on the varsity tennis team and play trombone in the marching band.   I have played USTA junior tennis  for 11 years and I have often asked myself what it is about tennis that attracted me to it that goes beyond hitting then ball over the net. When I first started to play junior tennis tournaments, I would play my match, win, lose,or go home. But soon these tournaments and matches became a way of life for me. Tennis has helped to increase my awareness of the different personalities that I encounter. Through the lens of the tennis court, I have learned about the human qualities I respect by seeing them emerge in the course of a tennis match.  I've discovered that tennis not only develops skills, but it also develops character.  While I love the physical aspects of the game, I am attracted to the personal qualities that players bring to it.  In a tennis match, the human strength and weakness, ego and humility all play a role.  In tennis, the range of human qualities is on display and each player can decide which ones to take on.

My most important accomplishment as a tennis player was being the first in my high school history to make it to the finals of the TSSAA Tennis Championships, 2009.  Also, in the same year I was voted to the 1st Team, All-Midstate, Tennis Boy's Singles.  My coaches and fellow teammates would describe me as a disciplined, honest and hard working individual.  I am easily coachable and have the desire to become a better player.  My contributions to a college team would be my experience and leadership in handling adversity and challenges, my cmmitment to the success of the team, hard work on and off the court and a strong belief and support for my coaches and teammates.

The Southern Region is my first preference as far as college location.  It is where I live, and many of my favorite colleges and professional teams are located in the area.  But I am opened to opportunities to play tennis in other regions.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my high school experience, both in the class room and playing high school tennis.  I currently have a 3.0 grade point average.  I've taken the ACT and I've completed my FAFSA.  I am in the process of completing college admission applications.  My immediate goals are to play collegiate tennis and earn a Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Science.
