I have been swimming since I was six years old. I vividly remember the first time I walked up to our summer swim team representative and asked to swim for the time trials. She assumed I was going to swim freestyle since I was only six years old. I told her "no, I want to swim breaststroke, that is my favorite stroke." She was a bit annoyed because she thought it would be a waste of time for a six year old to try and get a breaststroke time since I was sure to DQ. I insisted. She gave in and let me swim. I swam and did not DQ. I went on to win just about every 8 & U breaststroke race for our team that summer. I felt great about myself and my new found passion. But I soon realized to compete with the best I had to work really hard. I have been working to improve my swimming since then and while I have experienced both victories and defeats I have kept working hard. I am sixteen years old now and I hope to be able to swim for my college. I know it is a lot of work and takes a great deal of commitment but I have been at this for quite a long time. I have done the 4:30 AM swims and three hour work outs. I can't imagine stopping now and I feel that it is finally all coming together. It would be a thrill and an honor for me to represent my college in this manner. As a Junior, my high school coach asked me to serve as one of the captains of our team even though tradition at my school has been to ask the seniors to serve in this capacity. As a captain I have enjoyed great pride in leading my team and my school. I hope to do the same for my college.
