Personal Statement

My name is Connor Roach, and I am excited for you to review and consider my talents as a soccer player and a student. I am interested in playing soccer in college knowing that I have become a solid player in many positions throughout my years on high school and club teams. Here is a snapshot of my high school and club team achievements: Carrboro High School Varsity Soccer 2008-present --Chosen as starting player on Varsity soccer team, Carrboro High School. -- Maintained a 3.86 GPA (unweighted) during the first 2 years of high school while playing varsity soccer and varsity basketball, as well as being on the A/B honor roll for both years while taking mostly honors courses. This year, I am taking mostly honors and AP courses. Freshman/Sophomore: 2008 & 2009 --Chosen to be a part of as well as start on the varsity team. --Named All-Conference First Team (Carolina 9) player as a sophomore. --Selected as Varsity MVP because of my ability to play well in many different positions. Junior: 2010 -- Finished as a leading scorer in high school soccer in the Triangle region (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) of North Carolina with 17 goals and 10 assists for the season. --Worked with my teammates to reach the 2A regional finals in the state tournament. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 in double overtime, but we finished 3rd in the state. --Recognized as an All-Region player at the conclusion of the state tournament. --Named All-Conference First Team (Carolina 10) player, the second time in my career as a student-athlete at Carrboro. --Chosen to serve as varsity team captain by coaches and fellow players Club Soccer ?? Triangle United Soccer Association I have played at the highest levels of club soccer possible throughout my middle and high school years. I am currently on a Premier U17 Triangle United Soccer Association (TUSA) Gold team, which is currently ranked fourth in the state of North Carolina. Our team did very well in the CASL Shootout in November, 2010, and we will attend the Blue Chip Showcase in Houston, TX as well as the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, VA in 2011. Since joining TUSA in elementary school, I have played on the Gold team or played up a year (on the ??92 Silver team in 2009-10) for my club. My team played a year of Region III, and we have consistently stayed in the Premier division for many years. I am proud to have contributed to teams that have either won state cup or made it to the final four, and I am recognized as a player who can adapt to playing many positions. Coaches know that I have the strength of an offensive player but also trust me hold the line at defense as well. I have a reputation for being very coachable and for ??seeing the field,?? and I have a good relationship with my coaches. I want them to tell me how I can improve so the team can grow that much stronger. My college experience will be richer if I can combine my passion for the game of soccer with the pursuit of an excellent college education. I enjoy playing competitively at the highest level, and I am confident I can contribute to a team??s success. One of the disappointments of my soccer experience up to now is that I never tried out for ODP. I didn??t pursue that avenue because I hadn??t yet decided on which sport I wanted to focus. In fact, throughout middle school and even during my freshman year, I played soccer, basketball and baseball for my school. As a freshman, I decided to take a year off from club soccer because I wanted to play all three sports. (Our high school was only in its second year of existence when I started attending there in 2008, and I wanted to make a difference at my school which had a very dismal reputation for athletics at the time.) Nevertheless, no other competitive sport matched the satisfaction I got from playing soccer. I missed soccer during the spring of 2009 while I was on the baseball field rather than the soccer pitch. That was when I knew that soccer was more important to me than any other sport I had ever played. I tried out for club soccer again that fall, retired my baseball cleats, and never looked back at the ball diamond again. Playing soccer in college is my primary goal, and I know it will take excellent performance on the field and in the classroom to achieve it. It is the same excellent performance I am determined to offer my college coach and professors in the years ahead.
