Personal Statement
Little does anyone know the unique fact that I'm an Ethiopian-born Cameroonian. I spent four and a half wonderful years in South Africa from 2004-2008, where I enjoyed a strong, active participation in athletics, swimming, hockey, soccer, rugby, cricket, basketball, all of which I consistently made the A-Teams for and won prestigious individual awards. In my 3rd and 4th Grade years, I was the Victor Ledorum for 2 consecutive years in my all-boy's school, an award given to a person for having won 1st place in all domains of our athletic competition (100 M, 200 M, 800 M,Long Jump, High Jump, 4x100M relay, Shot Put) amongst a competing party of 400 or so boys from 3rd to 7th Grade. I also achieved the fastest 100 m time in a prestigious athletic event held once a year for the top boys school in Johannesburg, South Africa. I came back to Cameroon in the late summer of 2008. I had minimal participation in sports clubs in Cameroon, often having to switch because of considerable distance away from my house which caused accumulated fatigue. I did however play in my school's Varsity A Soccer Team for four years running since 8th grade up until my current grade level, Grade 11. This year, 2014, I also had the most distinct and humbling privilege of being selected to play for the Cameroon U-17 Soccer National Team. After having played in a friendly match against Cameroon's A Women's National Team with my school team, I was noticed and called to join the U-17 National Team in their preparations for a 2nd leg qualifier match against Ghana for the U-17 African Cup of Nations taking place in Niger in 2015. Aside from my God-graciously given athleticism, I have also very much enjoyed educational activities. I was part of my school's chess club in South Africa, and also played the piano and the recorder during my four years spent there. I very much enjoy mathematics and history, two classes in which I have excelled in often. I am currently in an Advanced Placement course for Economics and am hoping to pursue a major in that field. I would not do so a fitting job if I had to describe myself accurately, but I remark the words notably of my sister and peers who have characterized me as "really laid-back, calm, athletic and cool". I would humbly agree to that, for I see myself as someone who really enjoys just "chilling", as they would say. At times, that "chilled" personality however hasn't worked out so well for me, causing me to turn in or do things late that I would otherwise have done on time, but that nonetheless shouldn't overshadow the fact that I'm a very determined and motivated person when focused. To conclude this rather lengthy summary of who I am, I would be but an ignorant fool writing all this if I didn't give the ultimate, most important reason why I'm pursuing the opportunity to be scouted by any one of your fine institutions: to glorify my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the talents He has blessed me with and to be a living testimony of His endless love, grace, and power throughout the course of my life. One beautiful day, it only came to make sense to me that all of what I've been richly blessed with in character and body should be put to full use solely for the glory of the One who graciously gave me all this and can take it away whenever. So as much as I would love to be recognized by all you recruiting coaches for my talent, I would love even more so to be recognized for exemplifying the burning passion and desire to serve and love Him with all I am, through all that He has given me, so they will see and testify that it is not I in Him, but He in I.
