Personal Statement

My name is Dustin Corun and I grew up in a very small town in Lyman, Wyoming until the end of my freshman year where my family moved to Roosevelt, Utah where I currently live today.  When I lived in Lyman I was a part of their golf program where I was their top varsity player throughout my freshman year. I played the 1 man every tournament that I had the privilege to play in. When I moved to Roosevelt and attended a much larger school my sophomore year I had the honor of meeting my golf coach my first time playing at our course.  He introduced himself to me and wondered if I was going to try out for the golf team. When try outs came I managed to impress the coach and was able to continue to do so all the way through my senior year while lettering as a varsity player every year.  I consistently played in the number 2 and number 3 man positions during all my remaining high school years.

I have been a golfer my whole life.  I don’t have many other passions that run as deep as they do for golf. Golf has allowed me to become who I am. It has taught me patience, integrity and the importance of hard work. I feel that I am a great student when it comes to school which is evident with my overall GPA of 3.1 and my composite ACT score of 27.  I am also a great learner when it comes to new things. Like most people, I may struggle with newer topics or tasks, but eventually I figure out how to complete them correctly.

As a golfer I manage to put almost all of my spare time into training and making my swing the best I can make it. Until moving to Roosevelt, my team and I had to travel 30-45 minutes just to practice and play golf because we did not have a local course.  Without a course and people to teach me I had to learn most of the game on my own and teach myself. I would manage with videoing my swing and comparing it to pro players and making it as close as possible to those examples. Even without formal coaching, my game continued to improve, and my scores dropped immensely every year.  I strive to train not by how far to hit the ball, but rather my technique. Some of those techniques I focus one include keeping my swing in plain and whether is the ball hitting off the center of the face, as well as, keeping my putting stroke strong and consistently in perfect motion. I believe the strongest part of my game is my putting. With putting I have been able to check my technique by shadow putting and watching my shadow and checking the swing path. My putting has become way better due to this process. I have made more putts with this technique than I believe I would have by not training this way. As my golf career continues I would like to try and make it to the big leagues and play professional golf, but if I fall short of that goal, I want to pursue the study of electrical engineering.

Outside of golf I’ve taught myself how to play guitar which I enjoy because I deeply love music. I have engaged in other sports, although I have never had the passion for those other sports as deeply as I have for golf. The other sports I have participated in are wrestling, baseball, and I played on my school basketball team my freshman year as well as in church ball. I love shooting competitive archery and bow hunting almost as much as golf.  In my golf career, one of my best accomplishments was making my first hole-in-one, this year during the Utah State 3A Boys Golf Championship.  That exciting event took place on hole 7 at Soldier Hollow in Heber, Utah.

I am very interested in talking with you about the opportunity to play golf for your school. I’ve Registered through the RMJGT where all my information is available. However, if you would like for me to send you specific information such as swing videos and tournament scores please let me know.
