I love playing golf. After three years on the Park City High School golf team, I realized that a lot of work would be needed to take my scoring to the next level . This summer, instead of playing summer baseball, which I have done since my Little League days, I played in many tournaments with mixed results. Like many teenage boys, the mental game is still a work in progress.
My high school has won the state 3A golf championship, a Utah record 8 years in a row, and I am looking to continue the streak this year. As a co-captain, I help the coach with on and off course activities. During the summer, I encouraged others to play in tournaments, practiced with teammates and built relationships with the new players. So far, my scoring average is much lower than last year, as well as the team’s.
Playing baseball in high school has also helped round my ability to work as a team, contribute to a team goal and help maintain a positive attitude - sometimes just keeping things loose…
I would not be where I am today if I was not also focused on my academics. Math, science and foreign languages are my strong suits. One of my favorite classes has been being a peer tutor in the special needs classroom, where I would encourage peers to push themselves and not give up. This spring, I was asked to also help a sports oriented hispanic boy with his math and other subjects. This was a great experience.
Lastly, family has always been very important to me. My mom, dad and older brother, who has autism, have all helped me be the person I am today. The boys/coaches on the teams, fellow students and people I regularly volunteer with are another part of my family that have helped shape me. Moving on to my next chapter, my extended family will only grow, as will my impact in their lives.
