Dear Coaches,
My Name is Benjamin Lake and I am a senior playing on the boy’s golf team at Victoria East High School in Victoria, TX. Collegiate golf has been a goal of mine since I began playing golf in my freshman year of high school. I am reaching out to you to introduce myself and give you information that will lead you to consider me to be part of the men’s golf team.
I began playing golf with my dad when I was little but did not take golf seriously. He did not push me into golf. I have competed in Steer Wrestling events at Junior High School Rodeo’s. Even though I almost qualified for nationals, I did not want to continue to beat myself up! I then got into competitive paintball and played in tournaments for a while. Going into high school, my twin sister and I signed up for the golf team. There were some boys that I played with that beat me really bad but I love playing and was hooked. I began playing seriously as a freshman in high school. I knew I needed to work hard because I was behind a lot of other players who started before me. During the last three years of high school, I have worked extremely hard to improve my game by practicing, playing and working with a PGA Instructor, Renea Cowen, here in Victoria. I also work at the Victoria Country Club and play golf regularly with members of the University of Houston – Victoria golf team. And, I have had a tremendous amount of help with my game and my mental approach from my high school golf coach, Coach Troy McIntosh. I know Victoria is a small town but we have great people and courses here that have helped me improve as a golfer and a person. Because of all of this, my scoring average has dropped steadily and I now consistently post scores in 70’s with my lowest tournament round being the 69 that I shot in the Regional Championship where I qualified for the 2016 UIL 5A State Championship as a medalist.
On the competitive side, I have played in varsity golf tournaments since my freshman year and have been named All District and All District Academic my last two years. Last year, I qualified for the UIL 5A State Championship as a medalist and was named Player of the Year. In addition, I have competed in many STPGA Junior and Prestige Tour events. Over the summer, I won a couple of junior tour events and had several top 10’s in Prestige Tour events. I have earned enough points to qualify for the Prestige Tour Championship in November. I plan to start playing in a few TJGT events in the coming months.
I have wanted to play college golf since I started playing as a high school freshman. I know that becoming a college athlete not only takes skill, but brains in the classroom as well. Over the past three years, I have maintained a 95.2 GPA and finished my junior year in the top 10% of my class and I plan on excelling even more my senior year, both on and off the golf course.
I know that I still have a lot of work to do and am committed to becoming a better player. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or feedback. I appreciate your time and look forward to visiting the campus and meeting you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Lake
