Personal Statement

My goal is to play golf at a collegiate level, and I have worked very hard the past five years to position myself to be able to achieve that goal.  Ben Hogan said "I always outworked everybody. Work never bothered me like it bothers some people." I believe that he was one of the greatest golfers who ever lived, and I try to live by that motto- both physically and mentally.   From a very early age I always loved the sport of golf. I played other sports along the way, but at the age of 12 I decided to dedicate myself to one sport- the one I loved the best. I was extremely lucky to find an instructor here in Lubbock who has coached successful collegiate teams and currently has several players on tour. He has worked with me for the past five years helping me refine my swing and learn the mental game of golf. In the last year I have been working out with a trainer who spent years on the tour as a strength and conditioning trainer for pro golfers, and this has helped my develop the strength and flexibility that has improved all parts of my game.  I believe I have the drive and work ethic to be able to manage both academics and my golf game. I perform well under pressure, and on the course I am competitive and calm. I have integrity both on and off the golf course, and I believe that has helped me earn the respect of my teammates and coaches. Most of all, I want to  be an asset for the school and my team.

  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Bob Estes Tournament
  • 7/19/16 to 7/20/16
  • I learned a valuable lesson about the need to continually improve my mental game when unexpected distractions occur. I got off to a rocky start the first day, and ended up shooting 85- the worst round I've had in quite a while. While I was waiting to tee off, I was taking a practice swing and unfortunately hit a piece of rebar which snapped the shaft of my driver. I ended up getting a demo driver on the third hole, but my game was off for the round. I don't make excuses when I play bad- this was just a situation that occurred that I allowed to shake my mental focus. My dad always tells me that behavior, not circumstances, will be the biggest determining factor of my results. Another lesson learned, and I will continue to improve. The good news is that I got my focus back on track and had a good second day shooting 74. I have been working very hard on finishing strong, and felt good that I shot one under on my last four holes.
