Zachary McDermid '19 Recruiting Profile

I started golfing December of 2015. Before I looked into playing this sport that my dad had fallen asleep to every Sunday I played every sport that was possible to me. I began getting serious in basketball and began to play club ball and for the school team. I did that throughout junior high as well as playing flag football for my junior high. When high school came, reality hit and i got cut from the freshman team. I didn't know what to do. Basketball had been my life for the past 3 years and I was devastated. But I've learned to accept that without getting cut, I wouldn't be where I am now, an elite and competitive junior golfer in the extremely competitive state of Arizona, Phoenix area especially.  I am a prime example of what hard work, dedication, and a pure love for a sport can pay off for. I started playing golf, got taken under the wing of Jeff Furnari and Jim Mooney (a former professional and Arizona State product). They taught me the basics of this amazing game and I took off and never looked back. I've had hardships and struggles but each time I was met with a wall, I broke it down and met my next challenge. This game has been my entire life for the past 2 and a half years; every summer, every break from school, after school was spent practicing or playing. What separates me from other kids my age is my burning dedication and love of the challenge of this game and how hard I have worked with such little time to do so. My academics can back up this statement too. Throughout my high school education, which includes attending one of the most competitive high schools athletically and academically, Mesa Mountain View High School, I have taken numerous AP and honors classes with a perfect record. That's right, I have attained straight A's throughout my high school career with honors classes making my GPA a 4.5 weighted, 4.0 unweighted and giving me the 26th spot in class rank out of 825. I hope as you consider me a legitimate candidate for your golf program you will keep in mind the work ethic and fire in my soul that has gotten me as far as I am in as little time as I have had.
