My name is Colton Bates. Teammates, Coaches and my peers know me as just Bates.
i have always known that I didn't want my basketball career to end in high school. I've always wanted to continue playing in college and playing at a high level. For me the love of playing basketball dates back further than I can remember and every game I have played I have competed at a high level. I am a competitor who hates to lose more than I love to win. If I am fortunate enough to play college basketball, the work won't stop there. The work from me will continue so that my school is able to win games, tournaments, and championships.
When I was younger, my team couldn't control the ball and we could not win games. I continued to work on my dribbling, passing, knowledge of the game and found I had a great court vision I could see the floor and where my teammates would be before they were there and became the point guard with the ability to control the flow and tempo of the game. As I improved my game it was like that missing piece to a puzzle which filled that gap in our game and helped our team begin to see greater success together.
As the point guard I enjoy setting up that perfect play, a great pass or finishing strong to the basket myself. For me, being a point guard has been an ongoing opportunity and challenge and is a role that I will always continue to work to improve on, As a starting point guard, and varsity point guard both my freshman and sophomore years, my job is/was to control the ball up the court, guard the other team's best scorer, and produce points without producing turnovers.
What makes me a good candidate for your college program is that I not only accept the challenge and thrive in this position of point guard, but I believe I can be expected to do all of these things and deliver. I know my focus has been on my current role as a point guard, but I know I can fulfill whatever role is needed from me and best for my team. I am a smaller player, at a couple inches under six feet; however, I've always been the smaller player so I am very comfortable with playing against any size opponent as I have always done. To conclude, there are two qualities I believe that are very important and makes me a worthy player: leadership and hard work.
As a junior, I have recently been named a Captain of my basketball team, a position that has been held exclusively to seniors in the past. With this, of course, I am expected to be a role model to my team and lead the team to a successful season and hopefully a state championship. I have accepted challenge and plan to deliver in this role and create a winning atmosphere and season.
In school, I was elected to my student council board, showing that my peers believe in my leadership ability and this will give me an opportunity to help lead our overall student body.
Finally, I believe one of my greatest strengths in all I do is my strong work ethic. Being the smallest guy hasn't made things come easy for me. I have had to work hard for all of my successes on and off the court. I completed my sophomore year with a 4.0 GPA and an overall grade point average of 3.94, and I am very dedicated to keeping my GPA and overall academics at that level if not improving it over my Junior and Senior years.
On the court, whether in practice or in a game, I will be the hardest worker. I have enough ability to couple with my skills and work ethic that will help to make me a force at the collegiate level.
Continuing my basketball career after high school has always been my goal and like each goal I have set out to accomplish through out my life, this too will be accomplished.
