My name is Cordell Anthony Lord, and basketball is a second nature to me. First off, I would like to thank god for giving me the best opportunity to play this sport and for giving me strength throughout all of my life experiences. I was five years old when a basketball was put in my hand for the first time, and I knew I was in love. There was something about the sound of the ball bouncing on the pavement. There was something about the smell of the leather. I knew this sport was for me. My family has always done everything to support me in basketball. They have attended countless games and showcases. They are also a source of strength for me and I do my best to make them proud. My mom and sister always make sure I stay healthy so I can continue to play. My little brother is honest with me on my good days and bad. My dad trains me, helps me grow in my areas of weakness and helps me evaluate how I am doing on the court. His guidance allows me to have a better understanding of the overall game and the skills that I need to continue to work on. I have learned a lot about life, on and off the court from playing varsity basketball for my high school. On the court, I have learned about the different speeds of playing, how to play at a higher level, how to be a leader, and also how to communicate effectively with my players. There are off the court lessons in basketball as well. I learned how to be aggressive and challenge myself in everything I do. I also learned how to work well with many types of people and lead by example. It is through strong relationships that Teamwork is molded. My family and friends have given me a tremendous amount of support. I absolutely want to give back and to show how much their guidance and support means to me. I recognize that there are children who may look up to me and I must lead by example. I hope to use my journey through college as an example for upcoming players one day. I feel the best part of my Journey still lies ahead. Surrounding me with supportive people and continuing to have strong faith will be my pillars for success. I want to thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement, and for taking time to learn something about me. I look forward to the next phase of my life's journey; on and off the court.
