Personal Statement

I am interested in majoring either in psychology or neuroscience and even communications. I have played sports ever since I was little. Our parents encouraged us to play multiple sports to see what we were most passionate about which became basketball. I have a work ethic that pushes me to never stop training and working toward my goals. I'm self-motivated and I'm willing to put in the hard work it takes to win and to get to the next level. I'm a leader and don't follow others that don't have the mindset to be a winner as I do. I am dedicated to going as far in basketball as possible. I am a Christian and lean on my faith to live by. My desire is to go to college for my education but hope to play for a college coach or coaches that I will continue to learn and grow from. Finding that right fit is more important to me than the actual college size or division. My ultimate goal besides obtaining my college degree is to play college basketball.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Phenom Summer Jam Fest
  • 6/18/16 to 6/18/16
  • Matthew Statile, 6’3 2017 W at Independence HS – Liked what I saw from this kid at this event. He has a nice outside stroke which he used to bury 4 3’s in the one game I saw but at the same time has a bit of an edge to him as well. He did not back down from the challenge a lick in this event and showed grit in the process. He plays with some toughness to him and is not afraid to go inside as needed. That said his best fit is as a spot up shooter at the next level I feel. Not the biggest or fastest nor the most athletic kid on the floor for his team but his toughness and ability to shoot will keep him on the floor and ensure he is productive. Not a high ceiling kid but one you can win with.

  • Phenom Summer Jam Fest
  • 6/18/16 to 6/18/16
  • 6’3 ’17 Matthew Statile has been on our radar for several years. At our NC Phenom 150 camp, we stated, “Matthew is your old junk yard dog type of player. He is going to give you maximum effort and play team basketball.” He scored 8, 10, and 20 points for an average of 12.6 PPG. In the three games, he connected on eight 3-pointers which showcased his ability to score from all levels on the court. More importantly, Matthew plays with a high motor and does many things often that don’t always show up in the score box.

  • Phenom Summer Jam Fest
  • 6/18/16 to 6/18/16
  • Two-way players are never going to be a forgotten breed in basketball, 6’3 Matthew Statile (2017) should be climbing lists for his terrific play. While not the most athletic guy, Statile has made himself a great defender through great footwork and positioning. Offensively, the guy can flat out score on all three levels with ease. His jumper looks terrific, especially off the catch; the craftiness in Statile’s game really opens up the more he touches the ball. He’s a noticeably high IQ player on both ends, providing sharp-witted defense to go with a strong variety of offensive moves. It would be difficult to imagine Statile not playing college ball.

  • Independence HS has a weapon in 6'3 2017 G Matthew Statile. Shooter has 4 3's in this one. Nice looking stroke. Chew Johnson and Matthew Statile combine for 50 plus but fail to get Independence the win in this one. Nice showing by c/o 17 duo #SummerJam

He shows good fundamentals on his jump shot and took well to coaching throughout the day. While Statile is a good on ball defender, we would like to see him develop more within team defensive concepts. We are eager to see him age, as his tools suggest he could blossom. • 10/26/13 to 10/26/13
  • North Carolina Phenom 150 Session II Player Evaluations – Rick Lewis The NC Phenom 150 session II was held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Proehlific Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. 220 players from the Carolinas and Virginia participated in this star-studded event. We will take a close look at each player done in team numerical sequence. Team 11: Coach Craig Wilson #133 6’2 ’17 Matthew Statile of Charlotte Independence HS, NC: Varsity Squad It is not often a 6’2 freshman can come into a camp setting and make an impact the way Matthew did defensively. He has a high motor and plays hard and you simply have to love his “grit” on the court. Matthew definitely set the tone on DEFENSE and he is just one tough kid. He has excellent size; strength and athleticism for a freshman guard and you will hear a lot more from him in the next four years. • Recruitment Update
  • Phenom Recruitment Update: 2017 6'3 Matthew Statile 08/30/2016, 12:45pm EDT By Phenom Hoop Report/ Patrick O'Brien Programs took notice of 2017 Matthew Statile's play this summer with PSB Select. Matthew Statile, a 6-foot-3 prospect in North Carolina and a 2017 recruit, really had a tremendous showing this past summer on the Phenom Hoops Circuit playing with PSB Select. Statile showed that he can be a scorer from all three levels and just flat out gets it done in several ways, both offensively and defensively. As a junior at Independence, he averaged just over eight points a game and showed that he can be dangerous behind the arc, knocking down 51 three-pointers last season for the Patriots. He also showed that talent once again this summer for PSB Select, a summer that college programs certainly took notice of him. “The summer has been great, playing with an outstanding PSB Select organization that has really helped me out a lot,” Statile said. “I attended Roanoke’s prospect camp on Aug 13 and will be going to Coker’s prospect the first weekend of September. I have interest from a few schools like Roanoke College, Randolph College, along with others and will be taking a visit to Randolph this fall. The Phenom events and showcases have really helped me get seen by coaches this AAU season.” There isn’t much surprise college coaches have been taking a notice of the talents of Statile, as he has been working hard throughout this offseason. Statile informed Phenom Hoops that has really been working hard and focusing on his quickness on the court, along with his vertical and several other aspects of his game. Along with the events he attended for Phenom Hoop Report, Statile also hit the road with his teammates at Independence for team camps at North Florida and Queens University earlier in the year, along with other events with PSB Select. As far as recruitment wise though, he has been receiving strong interest from Randolph College, Roanoke College, and Colorado College. Other schools such as Emory University, William Peace University, Washington and Lee, Marietta College, and the United State Coast Guard Academy have all expressed and communicated with him in the past as well. “They have said that I have a nice shooting ability, high motor, high basketball IQ, toughness, and solid handles,” Statile said. Continue to monitor Statile throughout the season, as he heads into his senior year and schools certainly will be gunning for him for their upcoming recruiting class.
