THE NO. 1 PATRICK SCHOOL IMG_02071.jpg Scotch Plains, N.J. - Union Catholic hosts the No. 1 ranked Patrick School in a boys basketball showdown on Saturday at 7 p.m. By Jim Lambert Union Catholic’s Brandon Hampton, who knows all about overcoming the odds, has plenty of motivation and determination heading into tomorrow’s showdown with The Patrick School, the No. 1 ranked boys basketball team in New Jersey. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday at Union Catholic. “I played with and against all those guys, so of course I am excited about going out there and making a statement and having a big game against them,’’ said Hampton, who lives in Piscataway. Union Catholic, which has won its last three games to improve to 10-7, has gone toe-to-toe this season with many of the state’s best teams and held its own. The Vikings defeated current No. 18 ranked Seton Hall Prep, 57-52, lost to No. 2 Linden, 72-61, fell to No. 3 Roselle Catholic, 55-47, and lost to No. 7 St. Mary’s (Eliz.), 49-40. “We have played tough against a lot of the best teams in the state,’’ said Hampton. “I think if we come out with a of energy against St. Pat’s and play the way I know we are capable of, we will have a shot to win. I think the biggest key for us is our defense. Defense leads to points.’’ Hampton, who missed his junior season with injuries, has come back to have a big senior season for the Vikings. His agility around the basket and aggressive play in the paint have led to several double digit scoring games this season. “I have all my explosiveness back this season, and I feel like I’m playing the best basketball of my career right now,’’ said Hampton, who scored 18 points on Thursday night to help the Vikings defeat Plainfield, 77-64. “I just need to keep playing with the same energy every game.’’ The Patrick School, coming off a 64-58 victory over Roselle Catholic on Thursday, presents a huge challenge for UC. Can the Vikings pull off the upset? “They are a great team with a lot of size,’’ Hampton said of his former team. “But we are ready. I think we’ll come out and play a very strong game.’’ Published February 3, 2017 Print
