Personal Statement

My name is Jamon Stephen Gray. Jamon means a "Man of God" and I am grateful to have a name that reminds me, daily, how I should lead my life. My height is 6 feet 3 inches, and I weigh 175 pounds. At Brother Martin High School, I have been on the varsity basketball team for four years. I have been named Most Improved Player and Best Defensive Player. I have been named to the All Tournament Teams at the Newman Invitational Tournament 2010, St. Pius X Christmas Classic in Atlanta 2010, the Chalmette/Murphy Oil Christmas Classic 2009 and MVP of the Country Day 8th Grade Tournament 2006. I played an important role on our team in 2010 when we won the Louisiana 5A State Championship. I have lettered in three sports at Brother Martin: Basketball, Track and Field and Football. This year I am one of the captains of our basketball team. I think I provide great leadership by example both offensively and defensively. I also look out for my teammates especially when they are struggling or injured. I have played AAU basketball since I was eight years old on teams in New Orleans and on a team in Georgia following Hurricane Katrina. This past summer, I attended the Millsap College Shooting Camp which helped me to improved my outside shooting, immediately. Additionally, I attended the Michael Jordan Flight School at the University of California-Santa Barbara. These camps have enabled me to be the second highest scorer on Brother Martinas basketball team. I also am the leading rebounder, shot blocker and a consistent assist player. Every year I work to add something new to my game. I have worked with a trainer, in New Orleans, over the last three years. The trainer has worked with me to improve my ball handling skills. I am interested in playing basketball in college and suspect that if I am afforded that opportunity, I will likely play the position of a guard or small forward. I would like to attend a small to mid size university in the southeast region of the United States. Currently, I am interested in majoring in Physical Therapy but am open to other areas of study once I begin college. My parents have made great sacrifices in order for me to attend one of the best high schools in New Orleans and I am appreciative of that. However, I know that financing college will be much more challenging therefore I am very interested and willing to work hard to receive a scholarship in order to attend college. I am open to playing in a DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, HBCU or a Christian school. I pledge, to the school that recruits me, that I will work hard, be disciplined and apply myself in class. I realize that college is the next step in my development as a young man. I have high goals for myself and a desire to make my family and school proud of me as I continue to develop myself as a Man of God.
