Personal Statement
My name is David Gabrovsek and I come from Slovenia (Europe). I am a sophomore at Southwest Baptist University and I am looking to transfer this fall. I finished my freshman year with 3.2 GPA, but started my sophomore year with 3.75 in spring semester and finished another course in Jan term. My major is Exercise Science.
I have played basketball since I can remember and it has become my lifestyle. I am a hard worker who doesn't mind to get his hands dirty. This is my second year in the USA and I’m ready for a new challenge. My expectations and the hard work that I did on individual trainings, regular practices, and every single game need new environment to present all my capabilities.
Playing my freshman year in one of the best D2 conferences was a challenge, but I averaged 5.2 points in 28 games (started 1) while playing 13 minutes per game. My three point field goal percentage was .435, overall field goal percentage .490, and free throw percentage .810. My season high was against Arkansas Tech University - 18 points on 6/7 from three-point line.
My sophomore year started with a new coach and new training personnel. While adapting, all changes affected the team and its results. With my dedication to the game, work ethics, strong defense, and ability to understand the game of basketball coach found me as a valuable team member on forward position. Due my biggest strength – 3pt shot I was recognized as an efficient “stretch four” player and an important starter for the SBU basketball team. I played in all 28 games of the season and started 27 of them. In conference play I averaged 5.2 points in 17 minutes per game. My three point percentage is .422, field goal percentage .440, and free throw .770. My season highs were against Fort Hays where we won by 1 point and I scored 16, going 3/5 from the 3pt line, while pulling down 7 rebounds.
My biggest strength is my shot, although I have gotten much better in the post since the last year too. Now I am even more confident around the basket. After the season I always like to go back to fundamentals and work on my ball handling skills, quick first step, and finishing at the rim. I am hard worker who is always trying to get better. Last summer I spent with Slovenian National Team and went to represent my country on Under-21 European Championship in Greece. All the experience made me even better player and even more acceptable to new knowledge.
While attending Southwest Baptist University I also participate in social events and gatherings that are organized to support and give back to community. The most memorable experiences were a day spent helping at Salvation Army and a speech before a booster club.
