Personal Statement

I have been playing competitive basketball for over 11 years, and absolutely love the sport. My favorite part about the sport is the challenge. One day I might not be hitting my shots, so I get to figure out other ways to best help my team. This has actually came into play throughout my whole high school career. I want to help my team so I work harder to improve my game and lead others in the same way. This hard work ethic has always pushed me forward. Freshman year I sat the end of the varsity bench. By sophomore year, I was starting on that same team after having only lost two seniors. But simply getting a starting position wasn't enough for me. I kept working and, in turn, went from 7.5 points a game to 14.5 points a game. I also brought my 3 point percentage up from 35% my sophomore year to 43% my junior year. It hasn't ended there, however, as simply from the end of the regular season to the beginning of summer basketball I was able to put up more than 40,000 shots with the help of our new rebounding gun at our school. I nearly tripled my assist to turnover ratio from a 0.7 to a 1.9 and also improved my free throw percentage from 62% during the season, to 82% (23/28) over the summer. I know it doesn't stop there, with my senior season looming ahead, my desire to improve is greater than ever. My dream is to play for a school that challenges me athletically. I want to have to work my hardest for every minute of playing time I get. I want to be a good player on a great team, not the best player on a good team. My drive to get better has always made me work as hard as I can on and off the court. With my 32 on the ACT and my 3.9 cumulative GPA, academic eligibility will not be a problem for me. While I do not do other sports, I stay busy as president of the National Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society at my school. I am also heavily involved with my school's FCA program.
