Personal Statement

At summer camp, I developed a passion for basketball and started playing officially in the eighth grade. I was inexperienced but was chosen to be on my high school Varsity team in the ninth grade. Although I did not have much playing time, I was excited and knew I had a lot of work to do. My sophomore year I played Varsity but came off the bench with little minutes in the game. After I experienced my sophomore year I was even more determined to improve my game. That summer my dad and I went to work and I worked harder than ever to develop the areas in my game that needed improvement.

The highlight of my high school career so far is now! I'm in my senior year and I have earned a starting position as a shooting guard on my varsity team. I am one of the leading scorers and play multiple positions to help my team win. I have been chosen as "player of the game" for two of my varsity games. This year, I have learned the value of teamwork, commitment and leadership.

My goal is to be a student athlete at a college that is a good fit for me both academically and athletically as I value both aspects of the collegiate experience. As a three-sport athlete, I believe I have the talent, work ethic and character to compete at the college level and will continue to improve and develop my talents throughout high school and college.

Congratulations to #14 Cameron Powell for being selected the Everglades Basketball Player of the Game. Junior, Cameron Powell led the Gators with 21 points in a 73-72 victory over the Coconut Creek Cougars. Cameron shot 9-14 (64%) from the field. Cameron also made a game winning play by fouling one of the Coconut Creek players while the Gators were down 1 point, thus, sending the Creek player to the foul line for a one and one which he missed. This enabled the Gators the opportunity to come down the floor and win the game with two foul shots.

My dad played the game of basketball as a teenager and still enjoys playing the game. He encouraged me to always play hard and respect the game. He is my strength and conditioning coach and trainer. I work on getting stronger and I am on a weight lifting program 4x per week. His style of training emphasizes “defense” and “sharing the basketball” which helped me improve in every phase of my game. He stresses fundamentals and learning how to play the game the “right way” and as a result I consider myself having a high “Basketball IQ”.
