Hello my name is Martio Harris and I am a 17 year old senior at Flowing Wells High School. Throughout my 17 years, I've been taught many valuable lessons and accomplished most of the goals I've set for myself. Each day I'm striving for greatness and working to better myself so I can impact the community every where I go. My future goals that I've set to achieve include earning an athletic scholarship for basketball and attending the University Of Arizona to get my Degree in Business Management, through the Eller Business Program. All my life my work ethic has always been above average, and the past 4 years of high school I've made a decision to become mature mentally and emotionally, which meant taking more responsibility to stay on task. Now, I am completely focused on graduating high school with high honors and striving to be in the top 25% of my class. I will never settle for being just "good". I am a person that wants to affect my environment and do what God has planned for me.
There are a few things that helped sculpt me to the person I am today. One of the major influences in my life has been basketball. Basketball has been more than just an activity I could play with my peers, it has helped me develop many essential life skills. Starting out basketball, I was an average player that didn't do much on the court. Didn't like to talk or listen to anyone around me. Overtime as I worked hard to get better, I started to figure out I have to be openminded on the court in order to succeed. "My game" stuck with me off the court and I started to transfer things I learned on the court to real life. Problem solving, fighting through adversity, and communication was what needed to be a priority for me. It helped me grow and this year I was blessed enough to be the Team Captain of my school team. Alongside that accomplishment, I was named the Arizona Republic State Player Of the Week and a first team all conference player.
Even more important than basketball, academics and community service have helped shape me into the leader I am. I knew that if I wasn't doing my job in the classroom then I wasn't going to have any privileges anywhere else. As more years passed, school began to get more challenging for me especially because I was taking Advance Placement and Honors classes. However, I didn't let those titles scare me. I've maintained a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and I'm working towards being a "Distinguished Senior". A "Distinguished Senior" is a reward to students who expressed good work ethic in classes, showed great leadership around school, and offered their time to do community service hours around the city. Gratefully for me, I've been blessed to meet all the requirements. But I am not done yet! I plan to still help out around the city and receive even more hours than I did at Dunbar Barber Academy last summer. It is very enjoyable to know you are doing good deeds and setting examples to younger children doing those types of activities. Overall, I believe I will receive an athletic scholarship because I am a great leader and I will use all the things I learned to empower my teammates as well as learn great things from great coaches.
