Personal Statement

Hello Coach.

I am starting Varsity Right Tackle and Nose Guard for Lakewood high school. I am interested in studying Environment Science and Criminology degrees in order to become a Game Warden.

Although, I have always been the biggest kid in school or on the field it has not always been easy for me.

I have struggled to fit in with my peers. Kids my age saw me as a threat and was afraid of me, while the kids my size seen me as an immature pest.  At age 7 found my niche on the football field. Coaches wanted me because of my size, but parents didn’t want me hurting their smaller boys. Those parents called me a bully and wanted me off the team. Granted I was 7 years old and weighed 120lbs going up against their 45 to 65 pound kids who never stood a chance. So I was moved up to play with the 11 and 12 year olds.

The first two weeks I got tore up. I was black and blue everywhere, those guys did not give me a break at all. They would throw me and tell me don’t get up, and every time I did. I could count on the next hit being worse. Time after time day after day. My mom would tell me “you don’t have to go or do this” But I wanted it more than anything I was going to show them they would not keep me off that field. I had found a place where I fit. I didn’t care how hard it was or how much it hurt I was going to play football. Our second game I became a starter on defensive line.  Practice changed a lot after that because it was me now throwing my teammates around. At that time I could have returned all the pain and bruises I had been given. Instead I chose the higher road. Instead of saying stay down, I would help them up. This is where I earned their respect. My team and I went on to be undefeated. And as an eight year old,  I was a Midget champion.

I have kept that same drive throughout my life. I later found out I have a learning disability, which basically means I learn at a slower pace and I do not read as fast as others. Yet I maintain a C+ to B average.  Yes I struggle, yes I have to study harder and work harder at some things then my fellow players and students. But what makes me different is I continue to fight for what I want either on the field or in the class rooms. While my teammates are out going to parties you can find me at home.  I have figured out if I want to succeed then I have to work for it. I am not going to stay down.

I have learned that my size and football are tools that I can use to achieve my goals of getting an education which will better my chances of obtaining my a solid education and career as a Game warden.

Like every other player my ultimate dreams is to play NFL but only after I earn my degree. If this comes to pass I want to use the influence and income to benefit homeless single parents and to be a role model for kids like myself and others.  This part of myself stems from learning  in the fifth grade that I had classmates living in their cars and being bullied because of their clothes and hygiene.  As a 10 year old I seen just what the bullying was doing to kids who already had nothing and I stood in front as a barrier for them.  That is when I realized that my reputation as a Football player with character had some power to influence those around me and how important it is to maintain my character and sense of right and wrong.
