Personal Statement

Baseball is my passion; I have loved practicing and playing baseball since I started tee ball when I was five years old. I have visualized myself playing college baseball for as long as I can remember. I have been blessed with a supportive family and many opportunities to grow and develop my baseball skills and talents. I am an honor student with a Christian education. I have been taught the importance of academic excellence, hard work, ethical values, life long learning, giving back to others and working together to achieve shared goals. I volunteer as a math tutor for second and third graders in an area math league. I am a competitor and thrive on being challenged slightly beyond my current capabilities. It is my desire to attend and playing for a university with just such an environment. My dedication and work ethic are unusual. I get up at 4:50 am on school days so that I can be at school by 6:15 am to workout and study before school starts at 8:15 am. My freshman year I started on the varsity at shortstop and third base. I was our closing pitcher and saved many important games. I batted third and had the second most RBIs along with a homerun. My teachers and coaches praise my leadership and athleticism. Our football and basketball coaches have asked me to play for them because I am a difference maker. I practice at game speed and bring out the best in others. I am 5'10" and 185 pounds with an athletic build, quick feet, an electric arm, excellent vision and boundless energy. My training is baseball specific; one of my coaches calls it deliberate practice. I start with a dynamic whole body warm up and agility work, then I do tubing, pronation drills and negative throws, medicine ball touches and throws, throwing drills, long toss, ropes or speedchains, and finish with sprints. My typical workout lasts two hours. Later in the day or evening I work on my hitting and fielding. I am a big believer in objective performance measurement and feedback. Knowing where I am in comparison to my goals is motivational. I weekly use video analysis to learn and evaluate my pitching and hitting against elite players. I am a student of the mental aspects of the game. Consistency and confidence comes from preparation. I strive to play loose and in the moment by following my routine, having a plan and visualizing success. I find positivity to be contagious. I use it to inspire myself and my teammates. My personal drive to excel and be my very best makes me uncommon. I out work the competition so that my team can out play the competition. I am recognized as a leader because of my positive energy, humility, selflessness and respectfulness. I play for my school, coaches and teammates every time I step on the practice field or baseball diamond. I consider myself successful if I act for my team, perform with confidence, compete on every pitch, concentrate on every pitch and learn from my successes and failures. I would appreciate an opportunity to visit with you, your coaching staff and players to learn more about the university and baseball program. I would like to share more about myself so you can get to know me better and so that we can assess my future with the university and baseball team. Grant Rindal
