I transferred from public to private school this year. My parents and I agreed that doing so would better prepare me for academic and athletic success. It has turned out to be the best decision I ever made. My current grade point average is 3.6. Also, I am having the best year at the plate and behind the dish I have ever had. By getting myself prepared for college by taking college prep classes I believe the transition to college level classes will be smoother for me. I plan to continue to take college prep classes if available during the summer prior to my freshman year to make the student athlete transition easier for me as well.
I have been raised by my mom and dad and they have instilled in me the importance of rigorous academics and athletics, respect, kindness and most of all love and a strong sense of family. My dad taught me the game the “old school” way. He played in college and has done his best to pass on what he learned from his coaches on to me. My mom is a scholar at heart and a Ph.D. on paper. She never stops supporting and encouraging my academic successes. She is a great teacher which has made me a great listener. Thanks to the two of them, I have become a student of the game and a student in the classroom.
I have a deep love and appreciation for the game of baseball. I enjoy the game within the game. For example, I like to study the hitters when they get in the box. I look at their feet, their hands and I watch their practice swings on deck for little things I can use as a catcher to help my pitcher succeed. I remember the pitch sequence I use for each batter and if we got him out or not to plan my pitch sequence when he gets up again. One of my favorite things to do is signal my pitcher to appear to shake me off a few times and then finally take the signal for the pitch. I think this keeps the batter guessing and again gives my team success. At the plate I study the pitchers when I am in the hole. I look at their arm slot, see if they play with the ball in their glove, and get my timing down so I am mentally and physically ready for my at bat when I step into the batters box. In addition, I do the same thing every at bat including after every pitch. I step out with my left foot, get the sign from my third base coach, adjust the strap on my left batting glove then step into the box, tap the plate once, place the bat head where I want the pitch and then I am ready for the pitch. This is what I mean about the game within the game and the old school part of the game as well.
I just know I want to play baseball somewhere, somehow and I know there is the right place for me out there. I believe I have a lot to contribute on and off the field. I hold my integrity close to heart, the game close to heart and my sense of family closest of all to my heart. I look forward to practice as much as I do game day. My dad taught me that you play like you practice.
I have a dedicated workout program that I follow year round; it is paying off. I have increased my strength, power and speed and increased my RBI output and my batting average this year to the highest totals I have ever had. I give it all I got and leave it all on the field. I can’t wait to experience it at the next level. I love this game!
