Hello Coach,
My name is Reilly Hughes and I'm from Alexandria, Virginia.
Let me share with you what I believe sets me apart from most of the high school players you are now looking to recruit.
Maturity, Leadership Skills, Accomplishments and Personal References.
My references are individuals who really know me well and will confirm how I conduct myself on and off the field, and yes, how I consistently make things happen.
I am truly passionate about baseball. I will do anything the coach asks me to do and am more than willing to play any position and do what ever it takes for the team to win. I have been described as a very coachable, disciplined player with leadership skills, drive and most importantly, someone always looking to improve his game. My main goal is to play baseball at a highly competitive level in college while attaining my degree.
Another way that I'm unique or different from most other kids my age is that I've created a small, thriving business on my own. I'll be happy to tell you more about this growing enterprise when we meet.
You should know that I really like baseball because it's a thinking mans game and is very much like running a business.
I excel at playing multiple positions well. Start on the varsity high school team. Successfully play in the nationally renowned WCAC - Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. For two years, I was a starter and leader on the American Legion - Post 24 team and recently invited to play for the Richmond Braves national travel team this Summer. I look forward to further developing my skills and compete against some of the best talent in the Mid Atlantic and South East region.
Let me tell you a little bit more about myself. I was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Northern Virginia. I started playing T-ball with the Alexandria Potomac Little League when I was 5 years old and I’ve been at it since. My parents are my biggest baseball influences. I’ve tried to set goals and work to achieve them and my parents have always helped me along the way. I truly love nothing more than to compete on the diamond.
Coaches of high school, travel, and college teams have been telling me that my future will be in the infield or on the mound. Initially, I had my reservations. I couldn't always muscle my fastball past a hitter, so I concentrated on location and hitting my spots. However, in my tenth grade year, I took what coaches had been telling me fully to heart and I began gearing myself towards becoming a dominant player. But more importantly, I am developing my talent for playing baseball that I believe places me among a select group of well rounded offensive and defensive high school players.
I have always been a strong bat in the lineup, left side dominant. When not on the mound, I have literally played all positions. I am at home on third or first base. I believe that after playing many different positions, I have become a much more aware player. For instance, my experience as a first baseman has made me a significantly better base runner. My reads are better, and my jumps are quicker. In 2014, I led the high school team in stolen bases and RBI’s. In 2015, I led the varsity team in total hits. In 2016, my primary goal is to be named Most Valuable Player and be voted on the Washington, DC - WCAC All Conference Team.
I am extremely motivated to play baseball in college. I also view and take my class work and grades as important. I do not want any College or University to ever be able to look at me and say that I did not completely challenge myself on the field or in the classroom.
I have had current college baseball players and college coaches tell me that I would be able to compete at the college level. I am really looking for a forum where I can continue to grow under experienced coaches while playing at a high level of competitive baseball.
Regarding school size, I am focused on finding the best 'fit' in terms of both academic and athletic programs. I am the type of student that is regularly in communication with my teachers, and want to maintain that level of contact in college.
Geographically, I am interested in playing on the east coast, because I am from Northern Virginia and I know how important it is to be within a short car or plane ride from your family at any given time. But, if the right opportunity presented itself, I would choose the path that sported the best coaches and most competitive baseball, regardless of the location.
I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read my personal statement and good luck in the upcoming baseball season.
