Personal Statement

Rice university commit-I currently attend Rogers High School, which is a rural Central Texas town.   Growing up on my family’s farm has provided me with a unique opportunity to learn about the value of hard work and taking responsibility.  On our farm, I help take care of 500,000 turkeys a year and 200 head of Beefmaster cattle.   I spend a lot of time working on the farm after school and in the summer.  It has helped me greatly understand hard work and develop a work ethic that I know will serve me well in college athletics and academics.  It is my passion to play baseball but I also understand the importance of a good education.  I am a 4.0 student in high school.   I am as focused on my grades as I am on my fastball.  To be successful in the future, I know I will need both.

I cannot remember a time in my life when I wasn’t playing baseball.  I started playing when I was 6 years old and started pitching when I was 11.  I will never forget that first time I stood on the mound and faced my first batter.  I walked the first three batters I faced and then struck out the next three.  From that day on, I knew I wanted to be a pitcher.  My velocity was about 60 mph at 11 and has progressively improved to 82-84 mph today.    I have been blessed with size.  I have always been one of the biggest kids on the field.  I am now 6’4 and weigh 215 lbs.  I am a freshman at Rogers High school,  which is a small 3A high school.  It is my goal to make my varsity high school baseball team this year.  However,  if I do not I will continue to work hard on my skills so that I will make varsity in the future.

I learned early in my pitching career that it takes a special person to be a pitcher.  My coach Mark Mangum taught me one of the most valuable baseball lessons I will ever learn.  I learned  that no matter what happens behind me on the baseball field that I needed to understand that my only job was to win every pitch.  He was instrumental in helping me learn to not let what happens behind me impact my performance on the mound.  He taught me that the only thing I controlled was executing my pitches.  That lesson has served me well as I have continued to mature as a team leader and pitcher.  Win every pitch is my moto.  If I do that my team will have success.   It is my job as a pitcher to set the tone for the game and  I take that job very seriously.

Since I am from Texas, I would love to play baseball in the South Western or South Eastern regions of the USA.  I am looking for a school that will help me grow as a baseball player, student and person.  Currently, my interest is in the biological sciences.  My goal after baseball is to work in some type of sports medicine career.   My plan is to major in science and possibly attend medical school after I am done playing baseball.
