Personal Statement

I've been playing the game of baseball since I was 6. It has become my life style ever since. I eat, breathe and sleep baseball. My goals are to get a scholarship, play college ball and God willing, play at the pro level. I'm a very well rounded athlete so i can fill in any position and well give it my all. I never back down to any challenge. Every game I play I give it my all because you never know when it will be your last game. I am a leader on and off the field. I always give my team that extra motivation and boost to get them going. I never bring down my teammates, I find ways to lift them up and help better the team. Education is a major aspect of my life. I'm as competitive in the class as I am on the field. I strive to get the best grades possible and will not hesitate to ask any questions if i do not understand the topic. For extra activities I like to play basketball, bowl and lift weights with friends. I also do service hours at my school. When I have downtime, I complete my studies then go work on improving my weaknesses. During my next year in high school I strive to be the best student-athlete I can be and earn a scholarship playing the game I love. I know I have the keys to excel on the field and in the classroom. I look forward to earning the opportunity to play for a great baseball program and receiving an excellent education.

  • 17U National Team Development Program
  • 8/10/14 to 8/16/14
  • In 2014, USA Baseball will utilize a rolling invitation process for 17U National Team Development Program participants. A minimum of 38 athletes will be identified for the NTDP through the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS), the USA Baseball 17U National Team Championships and recommendations from professional scouts; college, high school and youth coaches; and the amateur baseball community. As players are named to the development program, USA Baseball will publicize the announcement(s) through a press release and/or by post to USABaseball.com. The primary identification vehicle for the USA Baseball 17U National Team Development Program will be the 17U National Team Championships. To attend these events, players must compete on one of the teams that will be admitted to participate at each site. At the 17U National Team Championships, USA Baseball Task Force members will identify a minimum of 30 players for the 2014 17U National Team Development Program. Additional secondary events may be held throughout the year by USA Baseball at its National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., which may also be used to identify players for current or future 17U National Team Development Programs. Players may also qualify for the following calendar year's 17U NTDP by competing in the NTIS. The NTIS is held each August and September and provides USA Baseball with an advanced look at the upcoming class of top players at the 15U, 17U and 18U competition levels. At the NTIS, USA Baseball Task Force members will identify a minimum of eight (8) players for the following season's 17U NTDP. Players may participate in the NTIS through a regional qualification process. For 2014, these invitations have already been made based on the 2013 NTIS. Once at the 17U National Team Development Program, players will participate in skill development sessions, various off-field educational components including guest speakers/instructors and intrasquad Red vs. Blue games. USA Baseball will engage members of the professional and collegiate community as well as USA Baseball alumni to serve as instructors and educators throughout the week. The 17U National Team Development programs will be used to further connect identified athletes with USA Baseball staff to better prepare and develop the athletes for a future USA Baseball National Team experience. Two (2) players from the 2014 17U NTDP will be invited to the 2015 18U National Team Trials and eight (8) players will be invited to the 2015 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars. Additionally, there will be an All-Development Team named at the conclusion of the event, and its players will be featured in Baseball America later that summer.

  • MLB Press Release 2/28/2014 10:12 A.M. ET The annual Breakthrough Series to expand significantly in 2014 More Than 200 Promising Diverse High School Baseball Players to Participate in MLB Scouting Bureau Showcase for Professional Scouts and Collegiate Recruiters Workouts and Exhibition Games to be Held at Four Regional Locations, Including Bradenton (FL), Brooklyn (NY), Cincinnati (OH) and Compton (CA) Major League Baseball and USA Baseball announced today that the annual Breakthrough Series, which exposes a diverse group of some of the top high school baseball players in the country to professional scouts and collegiate recruiters, is expanding in 2014 to four regional locations and will showcase approximately 200 players, the most in the event's history. Activities of the seventh annual Breakthrough Series, which will be run by the MLB Scouting Bureau, will be held between July 19th and July 28th at the four regional locations, which include the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California; the P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio; MCU Park, home of the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones, in Brooklyn, New York; and Pirate City, the Spring Training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, in Bradenton, Florida. Previously, the Breakthrough Series was annually held in one location while serving approximately 60 to 80 players. The Breakthrough Series is expecting to feature approximately 200 prospects, many of whom will be African-American, and is a joint effort by Major League Baseball and USA Baseball to promote baseball as a viable collegiate and professional option for urban youth, especially those from underserved communities. The event is completely cost-free for participants, who are selected by invitation only. "Major League Baseball is proud to team with USA Baseball in extending this opportunity to even more talented young players for them to demonstrate their abilities," said Frank Robinson, MLB Executive Vice President of Baseball Development. "The Breakthrough Series is a great tool for making sure kids, who might have not been scouted or recruited, are exposed to decision-makers at the next level. We are looking forward to giving them the chance to take this important step." Nearly 90 past participants of the Breakthrough Series have been selected in the MLB Player Draft, including 43 combined from the 2012 and 2013 drafts. In those two drafts, four event alumni were selected in the first round, including Courtney Hawkins (13th overall in 2012 by the Chicago White Sox), Victor Roache (28th overall in 2012 by the Milwaukee Brewers), Addison Russell (11th overall in 2012 by the Oakland Athletics) and Dominic Smith (11th overall in 2013 by the New York Mets). Additionally, participants in the 2013 Breakthrough Series committed to collegiate baseball programs such as Arizona, Ole Miss, UCLA, University of Miami, USC and Vanderbilt. "USA Baseball is excited to partner with Major League Baseball on the Breakthrough Series for the seventh consecutive year," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball's executive director/CEO. "This event is a result of USA Baseball's and MLB's mission to provide great exposure and opportunity for athletes from urban areas and grow the game of baseball throughout the United States at all levels." Prospects participating in the 2014 Breakthrough Series will be recommended by Major League Baseball, USA Baseball, MLB Urban Youth Academies, the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program, the MLB Scouting Bureau and Major League Clubs. Activities for the participants will include a Workout Day and Doubleheader Games at each location. In addition to the on-field action, participants will receive daily presentations from current and former Major Leaguers, scouts, college administrators, umpires and other industry professionals. The focus of these presentations will be to prepare the prospects for the collegiate and professional recruiting processes and offer information about alternative careers within the baseball industry. As in previous years, a large contingent of college recruiters and professional scouts are expected to attend and evaluate players who demonstrate potential, but may not have had the opportunity for exposure through other summer events. "The Breakthrough Series continues to be an excellent opportunity for Major League scouts and college coaches to evaluate some of the nation's best amateur players from urban areas," said Frank Marcos, Senior Director of the Major League Scouting Bureau. "This new format of regional events will now provide a greater opportunity to scout more players than any previous year of the event. The MLB Scouting Bureau is excited for the chance to identify and evaluate these players on behalf of Major League Baseball and USA Baseball." Established in 2008, the Breakthrough Series previously has been held at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California (2008-2009), USA Baseball's National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina (2010-2012) and at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, and the Houston Astros MLB Urban Youth Academy in Houston, Texas.

  • The staff of The Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy hosted the 2013 MLB Breakthrough Series July 22-25 which took place at the UYA located at Sylvester Turner Park in Northwest Houston. In past years, the event has been held in Cary, NC and at the UYA in Compton, CA. The series is designed to showcase talented young players who otherwise may not have received exposure for their abilities to Major League scouts and collegiate coaches. The Breakthrough Series also provides professional instruction and educational opportunities. Most of the players who participate are African American and come from inner city neighborhoods all across the country. Four members of the Houston Astros UYA were selected by MLB to participate in this year's event. The series ended with a nationally televised game at Minute Maid Park. All of the UYA players had great showings during the event, most notably of which were infielder/pitcher Pablo Salazar and catcher Jerry Murillo. Both performed at a high enough level to merit significant attention from many MLB scouts. Pablo played well in the infield and his fastball was clocked at 90 MPH. Jerry had a strong showing behind the plate and demonstrated his power with the bat. Pablo has been a UYA member since its opening and Jerry came on board this summer and also volunteered his talents working with the younger kids during six weeks of UYA Summer Camps. "It's an honor just to be in this atmosphere with these types of players," said catcher Jerry Murillo. "Playing here at Minute Maid Park just made us all feel like big leaguers for a day."
